Last modified: 27 Jun 2023, 23:02:47 UTC Hi guys, My main computer has only AMD cards and it works extremely well under Boinc load. Even on 6600 there is absolutely no GUI lags and I don't notice Boinc activity at all. I'm thinking about installing Nvidia as the main GPU (because it is supported by more projects and has better performance in most of them), but I was shocked to discover that under 100% load I get noticeable GUI lags while dragging windows or even typing in LibreOffice. It's not terrible, but I don't understand how it is possible especially on a top level 3080ti. Is it expected or is something wrong with my computer? It kinda bums me out. Thanks in advance. |

Hi Alex, I understand this computer is 'lagging' under 100% loads. If you are running it with several (5-10-more?) browser tabs open and doing some typing in LibreOffice, that might be a start. But more importantly, you're using at least 2 projects on the GPU, I'm not sure about Amicable Numbers as I don't run that project. Prime grid and Asteroids need a single GPU thread each and they are competing with each other. Also, with Milkyway shutting down their GPU work and just doing the N-Body tasks on the CPU, you should not be using all of the CPU threads. How many cores are open (non-committed) for doing the background work? With your CPU you should have at LEAST two uncommitted cores free, maybe three would be better. Lighten up on your project list and see if that makes a difference. George |

Last modified: 28 Jun 2023, 7:57:36 UTC Hi George, It only happens when 3080ti (which works as the main GPU connected to a monitor) is loaded in any project (at least asteroids, amicable numbers and primegrid). CPU utilization doesn't seem to matter at all. As I see you have a very similar config with Ryzen, 3080 and Ubuntu so it doesn't happen for you, does it? Maybe there is some conflict with a RX 6600, I need to try removing it, although I already tried deleting amd gpu drivers and reinstalling all drivers in general several times. I'm just trying to understand maybe it is expected behavior for Nvidia GPUs since before that I mainly worked with AMD. |
