Yes, indeed, it works fine now.
THX!

I cannot confirm that, one of my boxes that uses anon. platform because I want to enforce a specific CPU command set does not receive work anymore - no reason given.
It did receive work immediately after the comeback but today I wanted it to fetch some more results and the server won't give amy to me.
The application details page shows no limitations per day that would explain it.

This pc
http://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/show_host_detail.php?hostid=88984 uses anon platform (fma4 wu's) and works fine.

Mine ran out early yesterday, I keep a 3/4 day cache, and I am now crunching for other projects until it comes back up. I may wait a few days his time around though, I brought all my machines back right away after the last outage and then had to move them again.

Does that happen with all your machines?
I see you're using different BM versions.

The reason why I ask is simple: not long ago after reinstalling my mainsys I was not able to reattach to the skynet pogs. I usually use latest development version. I posted my problems at pogs and got a hint to switch back to the latest official version. That helped. Then I posted the problem in the boinc forum. It turned out that after a server code upgrade at pogs the https data transfer failed due to missing or wrong certificates.

So maybe the new server code requires a https transfer and the project is set up to try a http transfer?
The message on my side says: 21.07.2014 16:36:35 | Asteroids@home | Scheduler request failed: HTTP internal server error

I discover that this is done by some clients that have set their connection to server by every 1 seconds but they are also from different IP addresses and I don't want to block the IPs. I have to figure out how to reduce it but I don't know how to set some timeouts in BOINC server. I didn't find anything useful in documentation and I don't want to ban these hosts.
I have to figure it out somehow.

I'm crunching now my 11th year and have heard about similar things at another project.
It can be a wanted attack, a faulty pc, an overheated/overclocked pc left alone or a hijacked pc. Anyway, in every possible scenario it makes no sense that a single user (pc) blocks a whole project.
If you're shure about the ip-address, send the user a PM and block the address for a day or so. Maybe the user is not aware about the problem and will not react in any different scenario.

What irks me the most is the lack of communication in even just acknowledging that there is indeed a problem.

I work in the IT field myself as a network technician, and while people would like an immediate tech fix, they know it's not always possible to do. So I acknowledge the problem exists and reply that we are gathering information about it and preparing a solution. I may not be able to provide a concrete time for the solution but the acknowledgement of the problem often goes a long ways toward resolution and easing frustration as well as stifling potential conflict.

I agree totally what you say, it leaves a feeling of 'not being recognized' as volunteer. Not a single word from a project admin.
The project itself is intresting and necessary, but the management is one of the poorest in the DC world.

Can anybody help me. Preferably in german.

Thank's for your help.

Hallo Andreas,

leider weiss hier niemand genau, was los ist.

It's not about the credit. Some of us have grown quite attached to Asteroids@Home. It sort of feels a little like our own project... so it's natural that we want to know what is happening.

Oh yes, this is so true. And it is some sort of expected human interaction, that the volunteers keep being informed. It's the difference between interactions between computers and humans, the feeling of being part of it.

I found this:
https://software.intel.com/en-us/forums/topic/393241?language=ru

Seems DP is not possible on Intel GPU's.

In addition, this thread also says, that AMD APU's do support DP.

Well, I have been thinking about it. But there is a problem. This is really time consuming. If the Asteroids@home would do this, then everything about it I would have to do myself and the problem is that this is not my full-time job. So this is in a long term plan if my situation changes. But I would really like to start it.

Maybe you get some help from your team?
Would be great to bring 'Orbit' to a new life ...

As far as I know A@H is a double precision project.
Has anybody checked the DP capabilities of the Intel gpu's? In another forum someone posted that the AMD apu's (A8, A10 aso) are not DP capable.

Does Asteroids@Home ever plan to run tasks which aim to detect new asteroids? Currently it's only computing properties of existing ones.

Orbit@Home had this purpose but it's frozen and dead. For me it would make sense for A@H to also do this.

Good point. http://orbit.psi.edu/ says, A new version of the system is in the works, and we expect to bring it online in the 2014-2015 period.
But as I know this project it will last until 2017 and then they rerun a batch of old wu's to 'test the system'.

It's really time to pick that up and start a new project or integrate it into an existing project.

I would support it with more cores attached to the project.

Well, the first question should be: how good works the detection of asteroids? How much time will be left before impact, how many objects fail to be recogniced? Are there numbers available?
Who tracks the asteroids?

OK, answered by the server status page, enough wu's there to crunch.

Gentlemen,

also I have the feeling, that most arguments are correct and have a right to exist I must say that this is the wrong place to discuss it. Please move the discussion into the cafe section. I am shure that there are many more arguments that can be brought in. And it is good for the project, it's life.

But this is what is called 'hijacking' a thread. Threat title is 'Support for Radeon GPU's'.

Was there a special reason to choose nVidia for a gpu-app? Over @ Einstein they also started with nVidia. At some time they have choosen to try a openCL app for AMD-cards, and - what a surprise - the hosts with AMD gpu's are on top of the top-hosts list.

But if we are really running out of data a new app makes no sense ...

Good morning,

first MW: the project's algorithm fits 1:1 in the hw structure from AMD, this is the reason for the high gain and cannot be made a global rule. This seems to be more a 'once and never again' situation.

second Seti and Collatz: Sorry, I have no numbers; I join these projects only from time to time for one or two days, just not to forget them. They are not the primary target for my interests.

third: waist a single nWh .. I mean, each and every project has its right to exist and a right to be supported. One can never say what the results show in the future. There are private persons working very hard in developing and optimizing the code, porting them to different platforms. Watching the discussions @ Seti, one gets a feeling of the fun and the enthusiasm of these people, the best ingrediences for a good running project; the feeling of being part of it. One may or may not share the idea of ever being able to find ET's, but this is realy up to everyones own personal experiences.

fourth: Simap, A@H and private programmers. Simap's results are used by scientist regular and frequently, it's a free database driven by a university. Crunching for this project means to be part of a alive and useful science. No reason to leave it just because they found a way to reorganize themself to be more efficient. The database will be used anyway!
I hope, that the A@H database is also frequently used by scientists.
Repeating a post from Bernd Machenschalk (Einstein@Home): there are only a few hundred people worldwide able to write highly optimized apps for gpu's. One needs to keep in mind, that a gpu app must run under different OS's, different driver versions and different hw generations. Writing an app like this is nothing one can do over a weekend. Its easy to find these guys; look at projects where you have the feeling of life and enthusiasm (Seti has sometimes up to 100 post/day), have a good contact to the dev's and mod's, get frequently updates of the results without asking everytime for it aso. Everyone can contact Crunch3r, Slicker or Raistmer (just to post three names) by PM; maybe they will answer you! But be aware of what you are asking for!

Cheers

http://hardkernel.com/main/products/prdt_info.php?g_code=G138503207322

Do you know if it’s possible to crunch on all 8 cores simultaneously on this odroid?

Unfortunately not, the big.LITTLE technology is a either-or technology. Maybe upcoming devices will be able, this one not.

Your latest link to Mainboard Zotac ZT-JSTK1-10L, could, apart from the Nvidia graphics, be much the same story as with the ARM sticks, high upfront cost that are never recouped. And that leads me to the next question: how do graphic cards stand up against X86s from a purchase price and energy efficiency perspective? Perhaps it makes more sense to keep the old computers and to install new, expensive graphic cards instead? This is all very confusing since I want to have maximum crunch for my buck, but at the same time there are so many choices.

The thing with graphic cards: It highly depends on the project. Milkyway has a gain factor up to 50 when running on AMD cards, much less when using nVidia. Einstein has a average gain of 8 for both AMD and nVidia, Asteroids is a special theme, the gain is below 2 which makes it senseless using graphic cards from the view of price and power consumption.
And there is at least one project that has no cpu-app: Gpugrid, which is a nVidia only project.
Looking backward, the first gpu app for MW came from a private person, not from the project dev's, the fma4 app here comes from a private person, Seti and Collatz have excellent apps from private programmers, so I hope to see a openCL app here, which might also be fit for the Intel HD graphics ...
( Very best greetings to Crunch3r !! :-))) )

You mentioned faster RAM as a way to speed up things. Another way to increase crunching speed is to install a RAM-drive, at least for some projects. I’ll try that for CEP2. Their time limit of 18 hours has meant that my wus have timed out at 60%, far from completing the task. I tried a few wus but ended up aborting them. I felt if I can’t finish them then I might just as well drop them.

I hope it will work, because their research is important. Finding the semiconductor replacement for silicon, in a time when we are fast approaching peak-all-fossil-fuel, will not only enable more efficient solar cells, but maybe also prevent a technological plateau after 2025 when the shrinkage of ICs in silicon hits a wall. Sure, a few years here or there, but we will see it during our lifetime. Both events. Stealthy, and with profound consequences.

Also, I’ve been meaning to ask if any of you are running antivirus on your dedicated crunching computers? I don’t have any dedicated machine yet, but will soon.

My Odroid is my only dedicated cruncher, all other devices are 'Multipurpose' devices.
All windows installations run with antivir software.

One word to the Op Sys: some projects run faster under Linux. Simap is such a project. But this must be tested. Project by project and app by app.
