Aww come on now. We don't hold it against you that you talk like a whore. We know the mind controlling boogeyman computer holding your credits ransom made you talk that way.

And they don't depend on luck here, Andy, they use skill and facts. You should try it sometime.

Well, from a total work throughput it would make sense because just 1 of those machines could do the work of 32 volunteers, give or take a little. Later when the quitters realize everybody's RAC is back to normal because the big bad boogeyman... err, boogeymachine... has started returning tasks they'll be back to crunch more A@H. Or they'll be replaced. Either way total production goes up enormously in the longrun. It makes perfect sense.

Remember the point of all this is contributing to charity and feeling good about that, not whoring yourself out for worthless credits, not that you won't receive your worthless credits anyway.

There is a reason why it's throttling itself and I suspect the reason is that it's overheating. Or you have your battery/power saving prefs set to throttle the CPU down after so many minutes of inactivity.

Solutions to any given problem can be elusive. We doubt the cause is this or that because it seems unrelated or because we don't like the consequences if it happens to be the cause. In your case maybe you don't want to admit it's a heat problem because then you have to go through the troublesome process of getting the temps down?

I find if I fix the basics then other seemingly unrelated problems also disappear or at least the path to fixing them becomes more apparent. If I were you I would make getting the machine to run at its rated speed priority #1. You might need to add a laptop cooler or pull the guts out of the case and drill 1,000 holes in it for better air circulation, add fans, who knows. Whatever it takes is what you have to do because if the hardware isn't running right the software running on it won't run right either. I don't know of many people who can crunch on a laptop properly without adding additional cooling. Laptops are built for small footprint, portability and image, not for crunching. You can make them crunch well but usually that requires extra cooling.

You could test to verify. Install decent temp and clock monitoring software and start with a small CPU load (i.e. no tasks crunching). Then slowly increase the load in steps by allowing 1 more task to run per step. Watch the temps and clocks as the load increases. I bet you'll see the temps increase to the point where it downclocks itself. But that's fodder for a different thread, this one's for AVX related topics.

Don't know why your tasks are running slower but if you take a look at the list of top hosts in the Statistics section you'll see Jamie Kinney has attached 50 or more 32 core virtual hosts and they seem to all have a long turn around time reporting in their details. I didn't check all of them but the ones I did check have over 2,700 tasks in their cache. That's over 125,000 tasks in one guy's cache !!!!

Some people hoard empty pizza boxes and shoes, others hoard cores and tasks ;<)

Also with the v7.3.10 Client I never got any AVX Wu's until I put the AVX Portion of the app file in the Asteroids Directory, maybe that was the problem ?

I dunno. I'm running BOINC 7.2.33 and I didn't do anything special. After I brought my Haswell online I got a mix of SSE3 and AVX tasks (as expected) but soon the SSE3 tasks stopped coming (as expected) and it's been only AVX tasks ever since. A small percentage, nowhere near 42%, are invalids.

I don't see why AVX would be different on a laptop CPU compared to a desktop model. It should work for you too. Since it's a laptop it makes sense to suspect heat related problems. I'm not sure but I suspect AVX works the CPU harder and causes it to run hotter than normal. The reason I say that is because the temps on my cores seem to have risen considerably since I stated getting only AVX but the ambient temperature has also risen so I'm not sure.

The latest development version of Windows BOINC 7.3.10 detects the AVX feature of my Ivy Bridge according to the log, but it seems I still run the SSE3 versions of the app. I read that only Haswell supports the AVX app of Asteroids@home, is that true? Would it be possible to have an AVX app for earlier Intel processors as well?

Haswell has AVX 2 whereas Ivy Bridge has only AVX 1. The AVX app requires AVX 2 to achieve full speed which means on your Ivy Bridge the AVX app will not perform as well as it can. IIRC HA-Soft once said the SSE3 app usually performs better than the AVX app on Ivy Bridge therefore you get the SSE3 app.

I imagine an AVX app for earlier CPUs is possible but since they don't have AVX 2 it would never approach the performance achievable on Haswell.

I installed a Haswell 4771 recently. The A@H run times with the AVX app are very impressive. Thanks to the A@H team for doing a great job optimizing their app, wish all projects could do the same.

HTC supports HTC. They know bloody well people will turf BOINC as soon as they discover their battery dies in a matter of hours instead of days. And if they don't turf BOINC then they will when they discover their battery needs replacing sooner than it ought to because they're constantly recharging it. Batteries can be recharged only so many times then they're toast.

An electrical engineer is the last person you want doing the mod. First he'll burn himself with the soldering iron and then he'll poke his eye out with the pointy end.

I don't think I'm overanalyzing. In fact if you understand what I'm saying I think you can see that I'm not analyzing it at all. The DP crippling is what it is and that's it, that's all. I think what you want is for me to say "NVIDIA is abusing customers". Now that would be an analysis and an opinion, an erroneous opinion, btw.

EEeewwww, manual, that's sooo 1930. Today we have computers to do complicated things like that for us.

lol yeah, very complicated. That the devs of this project do not know a better approach than trial and error doesnt mean that its complicated.
The devs way it takes 40h of compute time to find out the correct app, doing it manualy takes about 10seconds.

If you're suggesting the devs here are not too bright you're dead wrong. Kyong and HA-Soft are Czechs not goosesteppers and they're amongst the best you'll find anywhwere.

Sure, people who do not know how to determine the app, the approach taken here is OK, though it would hurt no one to offer the other way too.

OK, both approaches might be good but what if the app you would think should be faster is faster only for some tasks and the app you would think should be slower is the one that is faster for the "average" task. In that case the only way to determine the best app is to test or do what you mistakenly refer to as trial and error.

Also you are ignoring the maintenance issues that occur when using your approach. (Actually, I haven't RTFM'd on those issues for a while. I've never needed to use your approach and therefore have zero experience with it. I may be wrong but based on what I read in project forums there are maintenance issues. Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm a goosestepper too so... ;-))

On the positive side.. don't feel bad about missing the link to downloads because this project might not have one. The downloads directory and URL is a built-in feature of BOINC server and exists for every project that does a standard BOINC server installation. I suspect that's how BilBg knew the URL. Some projects choose to hide the link for whatever reason, for example they might not want volunteers to select the app on their own for the reason I mentioned above.

It's saying the email address you attempted to use to attach your phone is already in use which I think means you gave an incorrect password for that email address. It has nothing to do with you being logged into email or using your email client while trying to attach your phone.

thats why there is an anonymous platform mechanism, just leave it as it is and give download-links for all apps

EEeewwww, manual, that's sooo 1930. Today we have computers to do complicated things like that for us. Just be patient and the computer will figure it out for you. If they give download links the links have to be maintained manually serverside as well as clientside. Experience has proven numerous times at numerous projects that inevitably either the admins or a volunteer will make a typo and provide/use a bad URL so that's far from being a fool proof approach. Also if users have to decide which app they want to run there will be many who pick the wrong one and run the slowest one rather than the the fastest one which would waste far more compute time than is wasted by the current method.

Manning,

The answer to your question is on the server status page (aka project status page). The link to that page is on the project's home page. If you don't know what the info on that page means someone here will be glad to help.

Beyond that, if your host is not receiving tasks then you should check the Event Log found on the Advanced menu in BOINC Manager's Advanced View and see if there is any explanation there for why you are not receiving tasks. If you've already done so then you should state so in your post so those of us inclined to help you don't have to pull so many teeth to help you.

You told me you are a mechanic and I remembered and knew you'd like the Ford crack. They're good trucks.

Is the small increase in DP crazy? Depends what you mean by crazy.

Saying it's crazy is expression of a personal opinion. I don't have and never will have a personal relationship with AMD or NVIDIA. We have a business relationship and that's as far as it goes. They can do whatever they want with their products. I think between Intel, AMD and NVIDIA there is enough competition in the market to guarantee that if one starts to gouge consumers the other 2 will take advantage of it and the gouging will stop.

Thanks for the info, Nigel. I didn't know Jobs was that stingy and sneaky. I guess the Asteroids team hasn't time for that but with Crunch3r assisting them it's only a matter of time and a few tweaks to the app distribution system (it's a tad complicated here) before you get what you need.

Because I told you a while ago?

I don't think it was your average heatsink. It was pretty rough, so rough I think it would have been rejected at the factory had a QC inspector noticed it. I've never seen another that rough and probably never will. As for before and after comparison, well, I wasn't about to reassemble it, record temps and then disassemble, debur and reassemble. I did have a baseline but that was with the old thermal grease.

Interesting, & sad to see that programmers are still put off from ATI/AMD cards :(.

They're not put off from AMD, they're put off from OpenCL. Actually, it's probably more accurate to say they like CUDA better and since ATI/AMD doesn't support CUDA it kind of blows back on ATI/AMD. Difficult and clumsy (2 words often used to describe OpenCL) are perceptions in peoples' minds. Perceptions change; programming languages, libraries and platforms evolve. CUDA has been around longer which tends to make it more familiar and comfortable. Instructors are more familiar with it and that influences student perceptions. In time, when instructors grow more familiar and comfortable with OpenCL, their attitude will be passed on to their students.

And I see what you mean about recent AMD cards, bar the R9 280s (which apparently are virtually the same GPU as the 7900s) which has decent DP, the other cards DP are much weaker. Nothing new for the low end cards but it is something new for the top end! Although AMD are still much better than NVidia cards (bar the Titan which is stupid money).

If you believe AMD is better than NVIDIA then you likely believe Ford is better than Chevy too. BTW, did you know that here in Canada Ford trucks have a heated tailgate option? It's so your hands don't get cold when you push them ;-)

Why on earth are AMD holding back DP power??

For the same reason NVIDIA holds back on DP and for the same reason South Africa holds back on diamonds... to create artificial scarcity to buoy the price up. NVIDIA has been doing the same thing for even longer than AMD and the deBeers family (diamonds) and OPEC (oil) have been doing it even longer than NVIDIA. NVIDIA's Tesla cards have huge DP power but if you think Titan is stupid money wait until you check Tesla prices. IIRC the entry level card is ~$2,000 USD and the high end one is $5K?

It's crazy that their 2nd from top current card (R9 290) is only 11% faster than their over 4yr old 5870 (2nd from top 5000 series card) in DP! Even the R9 290X is only a modest ~29% faster in DP than the 5870.

It's crazy from your perspective but your perspective doesn't include a view of the money they pour into R&D to achieve performance gains. Is what they do fair? Is what they charge fair? There is no such thing as a fair price. There are 3 prices: the price the seller would like to get, the price the buyer would like to pay and the price the 2 parties finally agree on somewhere in the middle.

Nigel,

I share your sentiments regarding mobile phones vs. macs. I wouldn't dream of supporting phones but the thing is they're ubiquitous and easy to develop for due to free tools. If I understand correctly, one can buy OSX and run it on any x86 based computer, it doesn't have to have an ostentatious machined aluminum case to work and I hear it's reasonably priced compared to Windows. Maybe it's the compiler that is the tripping stone? I dunno but I do wish Mac support was better and I see it's not as bad here as we thought it was. I should think Kyong's deprecating the AVX version will get you crunching :-)

If you're running OSX then you have effectively excluded yourself from many BOINC projects. One easy and very effective way for OSX users to get around that problem is to install VirtualBox and create a virtual Windows or Linux machine on OSX, then install BOINC in that virtual machine and crunch. Yes, the virtual machine has overhead and you probably can't crunch GPU tasks in a virtual machine unless you run Zen and your CPU has VT-d.

If you don't want to pay that overhead and if you run apps that run only on OSX and you cannot live without those apps then install Linux and VirtualBox then create a virtual OSX machine on Linux and run your must have OSX apps in that virtual OSX machine. Yes, that shifts overhead to the OSX apps but in the grander scheme it might be the most productive option. Another plus is that you could crunch GPU tasks this way.

This happens over and over and people always blame it on a database glitch. 99.9% of the time it's because they're using 2 different email addresses with one of them being a typo'd version of the proper email address. For example the proper email address is crunchman@crunchnet.com and they add a project to their profile using that email address. Later they delete that project then re-add it but when they re-add they type the email address incorrectly, for example crunchmam@crunchmet.con Poof! They now have 2 accounts (profiles) each with a different email address and each showing the same computer. How do they get both accounts joined to the same team? Additional blunders and typos,

Remember:

1) BOINC doesn't check to see if your email address is a valid email address so if you type it incorrectly BOINC will never know. I think the only check it does is a check to see if it contains an @.

2) BOINC pays no attention to your user name. It will allow a user named bob567, for example, to have 101 different profiles (accounts) named bob567 as long as each one uses a different email address.

3) BOINC pays no attention to passwords. You can have multiple accounts at the same project, each one with the same user name and npassword, as long as the email address is different for each account.

In other words, only the email address is relevant and if you type it wrong at the right time some very strange things happen. Type it, check it, check it again before you click OK or hit ENTER. q and g look very similar, as do l and 1, O and 0 (capital o and zero) 3 and B, F and P, etc.
