Now that I think about it I can't honestly say I am certain that pref has always been a pref here at Asteroids. If they didn't update server code from a version that didn't have the pref to a version that has the pref then I have a feeling the pref was recently made to appear by them toggling an option on the server. If that's true then darn it all but I think it can mean only one thing, right?

Sure hope so. I have 18 GPU processors waiting to donate. Let's hope it gets here soon. Regards, Rick

IIRC, that preference is for projects that have a CPU app and a GPU app, Einstein@home for example. If you have a GPU and want to crunch Einstein tasks on your GPU but not on your CPU then you would deselect the "Use CPU" preference. Of course GPU apps need some CPU time to feed/drive the GPU so the preference refers to tasks that run solely on the CPU.

I've never actually tried it but I suspect that since Asteroids doesn't have a GPU app, you would not receive any tasks if you deselect "Use CPU".

Yeah, I use the CPU option on other projects, but I couldn't figure out why it was here on Asteroids. Thanks for the reply. Rick

One of the Asteroids project preferences is "Use CPU". What happens if you check , NO? does it use the GPU? Does it give you no work at all? This seams a strange variable to me. Please, can someone explain this to me? Thanks in advance, Rick

It's 09-03-2013 and, lately, I've been getting download failures?

I've been getting dowload errors too. Rick

Don't know much about my motherboards. I know they're all Intel boards, 4 machines with two video card slots, one machine only has one video card slot with an adapter I installed to get the second video card to work. Sorry, but that's all I know. Rick

Thanks for the reply HA-SOFT. I thought I had to do something manually, like I do for Seti. Can't wait for the cuda, as I have lots of capability I'm willing to contribute. Rick

I have an old Sony Vaio (263Mz 128MB RAM) which has been crunching seti@home since it was born more than a decade ago. With recent requirement changes at seti, my baby PC can no longer crunch their work units.

You can do SETI v7 on that Computer:

... if you read this post (by Josef W. Segur):

(if you need assistance how to do that - ask in the above linked thread)

Thanks BilBg! I made the changes your links detailed for the seti workaround, and I'm crunching seti on my Baby PC again. Would still like to add Asteroids as a project though. Thanks again, Rick

Dear Asteroids@Home Administrators,
Thank you for being very responsive to my previous requests for modifications, so I could crunch for you. Alas, another need has popped up. Please consider giving us a bit more time to complete your work units. I have an old Sony Vaio (263Mz 128MB RAM) which has been crunching seti@home since it was born more than a decade ago. With recent requirement changes at seti, my baby PC can no longer crunch their work units. I've been trying to crunch for Asteroids, but fall just a few days short with my baby PC. Please give this request you serious consideration.
Regards,
Rick

Should the 64 MB modification you made be in force yet? My Little laptop attempted to get an Asteriods WU today and still got the reply, "Period Search Application needs 244.14 MB RAM, but only 127.49 MB is available for use." a second attempt by BOINC got this response, "Period Search Application needs 476.84 MB RAM, but only 127.49 MB is available for use.". Should I still be unable to crunch with my little (and very old) laptop? Please let me know.
Rick

Thanks for the reply. When I added Asteroids I got this message in the event log, "Period Search Application needs 244.14 MB RAM but only 127.49 MB is available for use. " The same message showed up in the client "Notices". Strange requirement, if it only uses 7 MB. Comments anyone? Rick

What are the minimum requirements for the Windows app? I have a VERY old Sony notebook (263MHz, 128MB Ram) I still use for crunching wu's. Still works great for WCG, Seti@Home, and Quakecatcher. I'd like to add Asteroids@Home, but can't find the specs anywhere in the message boards. If anyone knows, please answer. Thanks in advance, Rick

Your Windows app is working wonderfully, congratulations! Not sure how long your to-do list is, and I can understand if you was to sit back a while and enjoy your Windows app accomplishment, but if you build a GPU app, I promise to use it on all my NVIDIA GPU's.

BTW, I would still like to donate to your cause. There is no donate link on your home page. How do I donate? Rick

Great news! When you launch the windows app, please send an announcement via BOINC Notices. I'll be anxiously awaiting a chance to crunch for Asteriods@Home. Rick

Just joined (at least tried to) asteroids@home. What a disappointment to find out you don't support Windows operating systems. Please reconsider your position, and place windows support at the top of your to do list. Thanks in advance for your concideration. Rick
