Hi,

I'm having issues as well. Are any of you getting any GPU jobs at all? Linux jobs is what I'm mostly interested in ;)

Having issues with AstroPulse v. 7.04 as well, but this is another matter ;)

Please let me know if and when you are receiving jobs for the GPU's. I'm testing a version 2 of my Linux cruncher ;)

Kind Regards,
Dan

Hi Bilbg,

Upload jobs when done, right away, rather than wait until all the downloaded jobs are done Can't remember which version it was. 7.0.xx

Maybe it's this, not sure..
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/VersionHistory
Fix: Various changes to CPU and GPU scheduling and work-fetch.

Sorry if I expressed myself badly...

Anyway, I got my answer ;)

Hi Alexander ;)

Thanks for your help!!

Yes, the system seems to run right now. The site is anyway. But I'm still having problems getting work and uploading work. Actually I've been wondering about this. Since the system was changed to continuously uploading of completed jobs there has been issues. Could it be because of the increased number of "server contacts" e.g. "project update", "work uploads" etc. etc.???

I'll give it a few days and then we'll see how things goes. Thanks for the help ;)

Hi,

I'm having a lot of issues attaching new systems to Asteroid@ !?

Existing systems has a lot of "download errors" and on a new system which I'm trying to connect/attach to project right now, has issues as well. I've been trying to read about it, but I can't. The website/forum halts. I succeeded in making a post here, so the servers/the site can't be completely off the grid.

Anyone who can tell me if there's some kind of system update going on?? ;)

How can this be?? It's a clean installation, which has not even gotten any jobs yet!? Can it be something else than "bad connections" or "overload"??

Hi Bilbg,

Thanks for your reply.

If you (everyone) have no tasks to work on - no wonder your (everyone) RAC go down.

I think that when the systems are going to run more than 30 days without interruption, that the numbers will increase ;)

Hi Yank,

I've invested in several "larger" systems and I've just looked at the results for this one system. I've got 1200 "error while downloading" too!!!

Is this only during download maybe? Or is it jobs which has been done? I know downloads is new jobs, but my jobs done has declined during the last month. This even though I added another new system/cruncher with additional GPU's ;) !?!?

And it's not just one box, it's all of them. Have you heard anything???

I'm not sure if it's the same issues we are experiencing, but I'm getting errors which sound's just like it.

If I'm wrong, I'm sorry to disturb you.

All GPU jobs which has finished, get's an error uploading/downloading the job. Status in BoincTasks 1.61 reports "Download Error":

Hi EveningStarNM ;)

Have you started getting new work, Dan? I had been giving my GPU time to another project, but decided to try some A@H GPU work units. I haven't gotten any yet, and I've been trying to figure out if its something in my settings, which are scattered among the BOINC client, the project, and BOINCstats/BAM (having set up that rig before I thought much about how I was going to control it, I may have made a mess of the settings by doing things in too many places).

I started receiving new jobs today! And I haven't been changing anything, so it must have been an outsite problem. I've experienced very bad connection/long answer time to asteroid(at)home so it might be a national issue.

Have you received any jobs7work now???

Hi Mikey,

BilBg is telling you that IF you had read some of the other threads you would known that Asteroids has NO units AT ALL until Monday sometime. That means LEAVE IT ALONE and see if it comes back on later on, if not then you may need to reload Boinc. The home page has a 'server status' page, check it out, when there are lots of units do a manual update and see if yours works.

I've been checking the forum to see if any threads were less than a day or two old, to look for news.
I've been checking these as well:
http://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/forum_forum.php?id=1

I've been checking: http://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/

    News

    Server maintenance
There is going to be server maintenance on 09.09.2014 starting at 08:00 UTC. It will take approximately 30 hours.
edit: The maintenance will be tommorow.

    Server problem this week (11.8.-17.8.2014)
First, we are very sorry for this situation.
Admin of Asteroids@home (Kyong) went on vacation. He will be back on Sunday 17.8.

Sorry if I missed something, that's why I asked! It's not like I don't try, is it? And, I've been experiencing quite a few "Unable to connect to database - please try again later". Us newbies don't know what you guys know and don't always know where to look. I'm sorry to have caused inconvenience :o

Hi,

I know this is a stupid question, but I just can't find another reason.

3 computers has stopped crunching Asteroid jobs using the GPU's and all I did was change the port for SSH "/etc/ssh/sshd_config" and remote GUI in the boinc default client: "BOINC_OPTS="--allow_remote_gui_rpc --gui_rpc_port 31xxx".

Any ideas?

Hi,

Does this sound right to you guys? AVX's runs 3 times faster than e.g. SSE2/SSE3's ? I'm comparing 3 machines, all of them using i5 CPU haswell(4670K/3570K/3470). One system is now running AVX's and gets a little hot and the other systems is running SSE2/SSE3's where the CPU temps is only 65 degrees Celsius.
Never mind the heat, it's not more than 79-81 degrees Celsius on the "hot one". I just noticed this, because the mobo on this system controls the fanspeed and increases/decreases fanspeed all the time.
So, does AVX's run 3 times as fast (does the job 3 times faster) as SSE2/SSE3's ??? Here's the numbers:

It's just that the estimated time of a job on the same machine looks different too. This is 4 jobs running at the same machine, and all 4 of them are AVX's. But 2 jobs will be done in 28-30 min. and the other 2 in 67-71 min. Here's one of each of them. Why the big difference if jobs are the same sizes. All 4 AVX's are "State: Running High P.":

I'm no guru and not sure about these things, job sizes, job type's and how to read data etc. I don't know if all AVX's are "State: Running High P." and so on, so if my questions are a little "out there" I'm very sorry :o

Regarding the Estimated times for the jobs, there must e an error in BoincStats or somewhere in the system, because those numbers are extremely weird. Looks like the estimates changes for some jobs and not others. Anyway, it's the AVX's vs. SSE2/SSE3's and speed which is important here ;)

How much time is saved running AVX ??? I've been reading this post http://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/forum_thread.php?id=200#1826 and here's a guy who says 3-4 minutes only !?!?

Hello Crunchers ;)

Info: Linux 14.04/12.10 Server Setup. Headless Multiple GPU CLI Boinc Systems.

Just wanted to ask if the system is running again or if it's my bloody machine that's not working properly ;)

Can jobs/CUDA be downloaded????

If everything works, can the reason then be, that my system is not properly set up. If the system is not set up correctly, will it then not receive jobs for CUDA crunching? I have received other jobs SETI (Not CUDA).

The reason I ask, is that since I began fiddling with multiple GPU's I only receive non-CUDA jobs for SETI and only CUDA jobs for Asteroid. I'm only attached to 2 projects with 50% for each project. Is it that smart? Because my system is a standard set up, then SETI only receives the jobs it can solve and therefore receives CPU jobs. And then only CUDA jobs for Asteroid, because this is the only part that handles GPU jobs!?!?

Have a nice day everyone ;)

Hi Mikey,

The other problem with your idea is you need to TRY running 2 gpu units at a time from your project before you actually settle in for the long term doing it. Some projects scale their gpu work based on your gpu, some don't. Some use ALOT of the onboard gpu resources for each unit, some don't. For those that use alot of gpu resources on one unit running multiple units will actually slow down the crunching as each unit fights for those limited resources. Your gpu's only have 1gb of ram on each, that may limit the total number of units you can run at once.

Thanks you for that ;) I changed my next test system. Lets see how it goes.. Thanks again..

Hi all ;)

Thank you very much for helping me, but you are just to quick to me :o

Maybe I should put it this way:
Please show a sample of a app_info.xml which will help me crunching applications on seti@home and asteroids@home.

Which applications, you will ask me of course...

Those apps which will be the smartest to run on a 64bit system ;) As I said, I'm new to this - selecting which applications to run is a way to make my systems GPU's crunch jobs for seti@home as well. It's already running doing this for asteroids@home. No need for any configuration files there.

Will you help me accomplish this? And if files are needed, where to download these.
My system is a Linux system, Ubuntu Server 12.10 64bit with multiple Nvidia GPU's. CUDA 5.5 installed. Headless server and no GUI at all.

Linux version 3.5.0-17-generic
Boinc version 7.0.27

Why this old version when the newer 7.2.42 has been released? Because, when trying to install it from PPA/repository, I can't! When installing from ubuntu default repository, I get v.7.0.27 ;(
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=74347#1490818

How many units at a time?!?! Well, normally, the system decides this. The results are showing that they are not done as the setting is setup. 50% for seti and 50% for asteroid! But, I would like the system which will have 4 cores/CPU and 4 GPUS's to run it the same way. 2GPU's and 2CPU(cores) for seti@ and 2GPU's and 2CPU(cores) for asteroid@. Basically I just need SETI to use the GPU's as well. But I would like to configure my system to run 64bit applications only, if something is to gain this way.

Sorry for the newbie questions guys! I am trying :o

Hi Dagorath,

Sorry, didn't see your answer before.. And I've been away for a couple of days..

It's not a flag it's an option. And I'm not talking about uploading results, I'm talking about reporting results. The uploading of the actual result file always happens as soon as the task completes. The reporting of the result is a separate event and BOINC client may postpone that for rather long periods of time, too long for my tastes.

If you're looking at this page from the BOINC User Manual then scroll down past the section on logging flags to the section on options.

Thanks for showing this to me. I was looking for info here. I did manage to get it to work though. Mr. Ageless actuaaly did tell me to look at the "wiki" instead! Thanks for the help:

Hi Swiftmallard ;)

Thanks for setting me straight ;)

The accept work for other applications selection is for other applications within the same project. But it is still a good idea to have a back-up project in mind.

OK; I didn't know that. Thank you!!

Hi,

7.2.42 will report every hour. No need to use the flag, unless you can't hold on for one hour :-)

OK, but then again, if my CPU normally uses 1.5 hour for a job and GPU's 2.5, a 3 hour update would be effective I think. No need for all that traffic, or what??

Maintenance!! As Dagorath put it so very well:
"...maintenance happens, no sense whining about it, deal with it instead.."
This is why there's a function "Do other work if non left for project", or something like that. ;)

7.2.42 will report every hour. No need to use the flag, unless you can't hold on for one hour :-)

This setting is for Boinc in general, right? So it will be the same for SETI@home!? Sorry for the newbie question. Has been reading so much, I'm totally light headed :o

Regarding BoincTasks and updates. What does it mean when the field "CPU%" goes red. Usually blue on green when running full speed. When I came home, all serves where running slow and the fiels "CPU% where red on green I think. It was red, this I'm sure of and they where running slowly.
Is this because they haven't been able to communicate with the update servers? Or what can be the reason. Have looked at help on BoincTasks site! No red markings there!? There where jobs to do, so it can't be that. !?

Have a nice one, all of you ;)

"...these guys are serious guys, if it wasn't necessary, they wouldn't have done it.."

I keep an extremely small cache and put "return results immediately" in a cc_config.xml in the BOINC data directory

I like a big "switch between applications every" setting, at least 4 hours. It seems that way I get fewer tasks sitting there with only 30 minutes remaining.

1. Which flag do you use for uploading results ASAP? And will this not mean a lot of traffic for the update server/update servers?
2. Does it really change anything to change "switch between applications every" setting to a larger setting? My CPU's does most jobs in 1.5 hours and the GPU's in 2.5 hours.. Maybe changing the setting to 3 hours would be good for me!?

Thanks for the tip!

It was not ;) And welcome to the Linux-party! BTW BoincTasks/BoincView will show you all your computers running Boinc. This is pretty nice, when you are using different platforms. I guess you know about this, just wanted to be sure ;)

Hi bcavnaugh ;)

Yes, this is why.. The server is being updated and this means we can't deliver tasks which is done. We can't get new work either. But these guys are serious guys, if it wasn't necessary, they wouldn't have done it ;)

Just try once in a while, and you'll see the server running again ;)

BTW, your system will try to update automatically. If you are not using any scripts which does this in another way, the boinc-client/boinc-manager will try again and again ;)

Have a nice one ;)
