we have decided to detect available features by the app instead of having multiple apps and relying on what the boinc client reports. Once (hopefully soon) we release a new version, this boinc feature won't be relevant to us anymore.

btw Primegrid has used the same technique for a long time. http://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=10534

until then, there's still an option to run optimized versions on Windows via anonymous platform (if your hardware supports it). Compared to FMA it's up to 20% faster on Intel and slightly faster on AMD (Zen 4). There are rumors that Zen 5 will improve the AVX512 performance, which might be interesting.

It would be interesting to hear if a Windows user with a AVX-5112 capable CPU and BOINC Version 8.0.0 can download a 102.15 (avx512_win10) Task. Anyone out there have a success story ?

This developmental version will allow Windows users to get some of the new Asteroids@home AVX-512 tasks assuming that they have one of the AMD or Intel CPU's that have AVX-512 capability. And are willing to load a Developmental version of BOINC

I have been running version 8.0.0 on 4 systems for quite a while with no issues but none of my systems have AVX-512 capabilities.

Is there a research reason why the number of Valid tasks in the database is so high ? After the task has been completed, returned and validated and the resulting science data collected most projects purge the completed tasks to keep their databases somewhat trimmed. This reduces size and both back up and search and indexing times.

Thanks

Please provide detailed 'How To" instructions for making this switch to the Anonymous platform.
When do you anticipate the release of client version 7.26.0?

As a start you may want to read this article "Anonymous platform".
There are numerous discussions on the subject How To Setup and Use Anonymous platform also. You just need to do some search through the Discussion board.

The AVX512 application for Windows can be downloaded here:
https://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/download/period_search_10215_windows_x86_64__avx512_win10.exe

Contents of the "app_info.xml" that you'll need to run the AVX512 Windows application:
<app_info>
    <app>
        <name>period_search</name>
        <user_friendly_name>Period Search Application</user_friendly_name>
    </app>
    <file_info>
        <name>period_search_10215_windows_x86_64__avx512_win10.exe</name>
        <executable/>
    </file_info>
    <app_version>
        <app_name>period_search</app_name>
        <version_num>10215</version_num>
        <api_version>7.14.0</api_version>
        <plan_class>avx512_win10</plan_class>
        <avg_ncpus>1.000000</avg_ncpus>
        <file_ref>
            <file_name>period_search_10215_windows_x86_64__avx512_win10.exe</file_name>
            <main_program/>
        </file_ref>
    </app_version>
</app_info>

As to the When BOINC client version 7.26.0 will be released is up to BOINC platform developers not us.

Well a new Development level BOINC 8.0.0 has been released for testing which includes AVX-512 detection.

The new Development version of BOINC 8.0.0 enables AVX-512 detection. This is a feature on some CPU's.

OBTW Mac Users....

BOINC Version 7.24.3 Recommended version (MacOS 10.13+)

Was released on 30 Jan 2024

This version fixes a problem that causes GPU apps to fail after a Mac OS upgrade to Sonoma

I do run Milyway and Eienstein as well as other projects and I make my GPU's available to those projects as well.
I'm just saying it's more sensible to allocate chips to what they're best at.

I have adjusted my system allocation based on your suggestion and will give it a try.

Thanks

Yes my GPU is slower than your CPU ... but it is faster than my CPU Dell Precision T5600 running
Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5620 @ 2.40GHz [Family 6 Model 44 Stepping 2] (4 processors)

You may note that I have worked a couple credits for this project.
Just saying I've never seen such a slow project on GPU. Asteroids does not seem to be suited to GPU. You should put that GPU onto Einstein or Milkyway. Those run 30+ times faster than a CPU. If you look at the total flops in the applications page here, the CPUs are outdoing the GPUs, that's just absurd. https://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/apps.php

Bill, how many do you run concurrently on your nvidia card? So I can get an idea of speed.
Bill here I believe that my NVIDA GX 1060 runs 4 concurrently and the Run and CPU times are a fraction of the time on my CPU only systems.
1647 seconds to do 4, so it churns out one every 412 seconds. My Ryzen 9 3900XT (using fractionally less power) does 24 in an hour, so one every 150 seconds. Your graphics card is slower than my CPU. That's just not right. Every other project, the GPU is way faster, not slower.

Actually since there are Cuda application tasks this is a GPU project if I am correct?
I hadn't noticed them (I only have AMD cards). What's strange is the total Gflops shown for Cuda is much lower than for CPU. Are those tasks rare?

Bill, how many do you run concurrently on your nvidia card? So I can get an idea of speed.

And Georgi, any plans for OpenCL? My Tahitis are hungry. So little physics projects for GPUs.

This is why we encourage our contributors to upgrade their platform to the latest software platforms and driver packages if possible.
What in particular should we make sure is up to date? Since this is not a GPU project, that leaves that complication out. AFAIK there are no drivers to help CPUs behave better.

I asked the admin directly by private message a week ago and no answer...
Wait & see...

And I have just emailed Josef Durech who is attached to the parent Institute to see if he can assist.

We will what our to communication attempts acomplish.

** Update **

Josef Durech responded with the following ....

There is still some problem with sending the units 🙁 It seems the chain of problems is neverending.

Best

I am looking for an update to the status for the Project.

When will you be ready to accept completed work units still out in the field from the period prior to system failure ?

And when will you resume new operations.

Hi Dr Who Fan,

I've been receiving regular asteroid android tasks for months; I'm crunching them on a Samsung tablet, Boinc version 7.4.53, Android v. 8.1.0 with Samsung Experience v.9.5, Android security patch level 01 April 2020. WU's are generally taking about 33-34 hours to complete, and appear to be regularly replaced as they finish. Maybe if you check your task settings..?

Mike, Bristol, UK

Mike what Task application version and type are receiving ?

Open Question is anyone receiving Android Tasks from Asteroids@home ?

Been so long I can't recall the last time I received any tasks on Android from this project.

Maybe a moderator or the Admin will know and respond or if broken Fix.

Jazzy Gold,

Are you referring to "Suspended by user" on your Projects tab on the right side ?

Or are you looking at your Tasks tab and seeing "Suspended - computer in use" in the third column ?
