Your opinions about Asteroids@home |
Intended to join BOINC for a while, have just got round to doing so. Main computers are running larger Einstein computations. I have set up asteroidsathome on a Raspberry Pi, find that it takes about 80h to do a 315000GFlop calc. Einstein requires too much memory for these systems. The recent surge in smaller Linux boxes has rekindled an interest in home computing - never really got on with Windows programming - and to find a good use for such systems. It makes you appreciate how much time is wasted by most computers. May well add more Pis to the network to provide additional capacity.
I think that mapping the asteroid belt and its characteristics will provide a valuable insight into how they behave and what causes some of them to leave their orbits, which is a potential risk to us here on Earth. |
