Your personal background.
I live at the edge of a little old coal-mining town in Missouri, USA that is only on some maps, one that Google Maps doesn't even know about. It used to be a thriving little town, with everything from a large school building and a bank to a bar and a one-pump gas station, but no longer has even a church.
I'm involved in several things, including transcribing old records for the World Archives Project, being a volunteer photographer for the FindaGrave website when I an physically able, organic gardening, raising chickens and other poultry, and pushing for equality (no matter one's color, beliefs - or lack thereof, gender, orientation, or ethnicity) and sustainability (which involves many environmental issues). I have organized, helped organize, or been involved with protests and events on many of these issues. I am currently involved with organizing an event (or potentially a series of events)to teach farmers and gardeners about the benefits of sustainable farming and using heirloom/open-pollinated seeds rather than hybrid or GMO seeds. Find us on Facebook using the term SEEDs.
I have been happily married to a wonderful man for over 3 decades, and have two sons. The eldest has a severe form of bipolar disorder, which gives me plenty of grey hairs as well as the desire to push for better mental health options for people. The youngest was born 3 months premature (and was declared dead at birth!), but has overcome the many obstacles he had due to his circumstances of birth to become a fine young man studying to become an architect. He hopes to design carbon-neutral homes and buildings. His prematurity would have been considered a "pre-existing condition" to insurance companies, which gives me yet another reason to be thankful for the ACA (colloquially known as Obamacare to many), aside from its many other benefits like already showing a reduction in healthcare costs and (provably) reducing the deficit.
In February of 2012, I had a fall which resulted in damage to an area of the lower back known as the S.I. joint. It causes constant pain, forces me to be on strong pain medication (which affects both my thought processes and my concentration), and has caused me to be disabled. As of February, 2014, I am still waiting for confirmation that I can receive Social Security Disability payments (as well as a union pension I will be able to draw once I am "officially" disabled). This disability prevents me from participating in many activities I used to love, like canoeing and hiking, as well as severely hampering others I love to do, like hunting, fishing, and camping.
Well, I think that covers pretty much everything about me! Didn't expect a novel, didja? ;-)
Your opinions about Asteroids@home
I run this program to help create the equivalent of a huge supercomputer spanning the whole planet, which can help us all be safer. I have spoken to everyone I can about the project, and hopefully at least a few of them have signed up. My eldest son recently signed up! Still working on my youngest. ;-) He keeps forgetting and getting distracted by all the other things that young men usually get distracted by.
The idea that this project is mapping as many of the near Earth objects as possible, to determine if any of them are a potential danger to the only planet we can currently call home is pretty cool to me. It is a vital project, since missing a dangerous asteroid could mean the difference between survival and extinction. I would suggest that, if you're reading this, you tell everyone you know about this project, as well.
