Profile: Marty Smith

Your personal background.
I was born in Frankfort, Kentucky, USA in the mid-nineteen fifties. My parents were young socialites. My father was an attorney at a prestigious law firm in the city and my mother was a dedicated wife.

Originally settled along the Kentucky river area between Carrolton and Sparta, my fathers family was affluent as a result of the hard work and investments of his uncle Martin T. Smith. My paternal grandfather passed away while my father was in his early teens in the forties, and my great Uncle Martin apparently had assumed the role of parent for my father and his sister. I was named after my Great Uncle Martin and was the "apple of his eye". I recall him trying to teach me to read from the Wall Street Journal from an early age.

My mothers family were hard working folks who had come from Virginia and had settled in Muhlenberg county Kentucky. Her grandfather Verna E. Ford, worked as a tobacco buyer for a local warehouse. He rode a horse around the area from farm to farm, grading and buying product with cash. He carried a pistol in those days to protect himself and the companies cash.
