Lack of a Windows application deprives the project of a large number of participants.

Would someone please provide some bug infested, security risk piece of crap software for the lemmings so they'll STFU? They'll love you for it and they'll love you even more if you charge them $200 for it.

The best selling car brand is Ford.

Ford is nowhere near as good Honda, BMW, Toyota, VW etc.

But Ford is the best selling. Ford is the most popular.

By your logic, roads should be built that Fords cannot drive on becuase there are better cars.

:-P

It's a very risk option for a new project to add resends to the end of the queue. I can think of a couple of projects where I lost a lot of completed WUs when the batch was abandoned, or the server was wiped, or the database was corrupted.

So I'm limiting my exposure and only running WUs where my wingnut has already completed. If the wingnut has failed for any reason, I abort the WU. As a result, I'm not getting much done :(

Al.

It's interesting, though, to see that people are getting WU's and submitting results, but the UL/DL server is on the fritz. I've been polling for WU's for a couple of days, and I've gotten nothing whatsoever.

The UL/DL server status is misleading. Ignore it :)

You won't get any work on your Windows machine as this project is linux only at the moment :)

And the WU is waiting to be sent now.

Will it ever be sent though? I've completed my replication, but the replacement for the failed download remains unsent http://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/workunit.php?wuid=4446

Similarly this WU http://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/workunit.php?wuid=5579 that I'm running had it's partner WU die with a computation error and the replacement WU has not been sent out. I've suspended it for now as 20 hours would be a lot to lose on one WU.

I ask because I've lost so much computing time at other projects because of similar problems (WUs being cancelled before the 3rd replication went out etc). I've only got 2 linux hosts and I don't really want to tie them up with unproductive work. Once the Windows app is available I won't be so worrried as I've got a dozen of those waiting to go :)

Cheers,

Al.

p.s. Yes, I know this is really still an alpha project so I shouldn't expect anything to work :)

p.p.s. Based on the one WU that I've had validated, the credit is way too low compared to other projects. Not much worried about it, but maybe something is wrong with the validator.

Ok :)

My linux hosts are really old and slow, so those times will be 3 times long for me, but that's OK. I'll let them run :)

We will try but it is a little problem, there is no one of us with Mac, so converting the application won't be easy.

Two possible solutions are to run an OSX instance in a VM, or cross-compile on a different platform. I believe that other projects have used this approach, but don't take my word for it :)

Oh, third solution, hope that a kind mac expert joins the project and can help out. I'm also pretty sure that someone will help out with a GPU app too sooner or later.

Are these 'real' rather than test WUs now? They seem to likely to take much longer than before.

Which is OK. But ...

This WU http://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/workunit.php?wuid=4446 has a failed download, leaving me running the only live replication, as the replacement hasn't been sent for some reason. I don't mind burning up cycles on short WUs that ultimately fail to validate, but long ones, I'd rather not :)

Oh, the MQ was 2 on mine, and max error etc was 20. Must have got caught in the crossfire :)

My WU http://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/workunit.php?wuid=534 suffered a similar fate when my wingnut's replication was cancelled. It was Bok this time, so looks like that last batch just got wholesale cancelled.

Hehe. The MQ is set to 20, but the IR is only 2, and the max total is set to 10. Looks like nothing can ever validate ;)

Sample WUs:

http://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/workunit.php?wuid=515
http://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/workunit.php?wuid=510

minimum quorum 20
initial replication 2
max # of error/total/success tasks 3, 10, 6

I've managed to download a WU on each of my linux hosts now. Let's just hope they crunch OK :)

Pity there's no Windows application yet, but I've posted that in the Wish List forum :)

Given that 90% of hosts crunching BOINC are Windows, it would be sensible/useful/nice to develop an appropriate app ASAP. Both 32 and 64 bit ideally.

I dare say someone (Zombie67, take a bow) will along shortly to request a Mac app ;)

Cheers,

Al.

p.s. Don't ask me for a citation on the Windows/*nix split, I can't remember where I found the host breakdown.

Looks like an interesting project.

Many years ago I used to (try to!) calculate the periods of eclipsing binary stars using the 'tracing paper method' - Be nice to do something similar without the hard work :)

What with the interest in NEOs etc, I'm sure this project will be popular.

Oh, and I see stats are already being exported - Excellent!

Just need some WUs now please :)

Cheers,

Al.
