Hi

Is there an issue with the Asteroids website? It seems to be running very slowly and sometimes the web server is not allowing members to log on, to see their results or their project preferences. Is demand for tasks overwhelming the servers capabilities perhaps?

However, I know from before that the Asteroids website has been affected by bots and/or Denial of Service attacks?

So, maybe a web admin needs to look at the logs and do something to improve things?

The server is overburdened with the massive database it has to carry. We've asked the admins to prune the database down to only a month and move the older results off to an external database on its own server.

But they have not responded that is going to happen.

There is no reason to carry over 500K finished tasks in my database entry like I have. The website has been agonizingly slow for over a couple of months now.

It might be related, but it's unlikely to be the main reason. About a month ago, there was a DOS attack originating from China, and it may still be ongoing despite the countermeasures that were implemented...
I've told the admins to recheck the server logs, and I'll inform you as soon as I receive any updates. However, given that they're usually busy and today is a holiday, it might take some time.

Hi

Thanks for the info.

I did also get a reply from Pavel (on Discord) and he was going to let Geordi know and he too suggested that a DOS attack might be the reason.

From my side, I am the admin for the Formula BOINC Sprint which is taking place from 24-07-04 16:00 UTC until 24-07-07 16:00 UTC and as such there are issues obtaining stats from the Asteroids project as the web server is not responding so that the stats export XML can be accessed in full.

So, any help would be greatly appreciated so that the FB teams and members can see the BOINC credits they are earning during this event.

regards
Tim

Hi

Thanks for the feedback.

it does seem strange that such "back office"" functions such as keeping the database lean has been overlooked and that this is causing "self-inflicted" harm to the project.

Maybe someone can fix this ASAP?
