Last modified: 28 Dec 2024, 18:31:51 UTC Does this project run faster on Apple Silicon CPU's with or without the Efficiency cores enabled? Cause on the folding at home forum, I was told to set CPU core utilization to only the amount matching my performance core count, which is 4, compared to 6 efficiency cores, for a total of 10, and this makes Folding at home run faster. |

Just a quick follow-up on my testing regarding the efficiency cores vs. performance cores for Asteroids@home on Apple Silicon. I’ve spent some time benchmarking the task completion times on my M4 setup, and the results align closely with what Keith mentioned regarding SIMD utilization. While running tasks across all cores does increase total throughput, restricting the work to the performance cores significantly improves the 'tasks-per-hour' efficiency for individual work units. The efficiency cores, while great for background tasks, seem to throttle the overall SIMD throughput when the project's application is trying to saturate the pipeline. For anyone else crunching on Apple Silicon, my recommendation is to experiment with your BOINC 'max CPUs' settings to match your performance core count if you are chasing faster turnaround times. Thanks to the community for the feedback on this! |
