Why exactly did this project decide to go with the #2 OS on this planet to start with, anyhow? Windows and Linux both would be great, but just the penguin? Sorry, it fails to compute. If you want mega-results, why did you shut out the Windows folks? Disappointing, but I'm still here to crunch when you want to let me in... :) The babydoll in my avatar is Hayley Westenra, the finest soprano on the face of this planet or any other... |

In order to participate, I pulled down a copy of VirtualBox (Oracle/Sun), and set up a simple VM. Then I pulled the latest Ubuntu and set it up. It took a few hours to get it all correct. This allows me to run the Linux application. There is some overhead with the setup, but it does let me contribute during the wait. |

I don't know why new projects even bother writing apps for Windows and OS X if the project developer's OS of choice is Linux. The Test4Theory@home project has only a Linux app and they run it on OS X and Windows hosts by sending a wrapper application that starts a Linux VM which runs the science app. The beauty of their approach is: 1) they get to develop their app(s) on the OS they are most familiar with 2) they have only 1 version of each app to maintain instead of an app for each OS 3) differences in results due to differences in OS and 32 bit vs. 64 bit is eliminated entirely 4) Oracle also supports Solaris and I know there are 3rd party builds for FreeBSD, BEOS and others, VirtualBox is an open source project I can't see established projects migrating to VMs but I am convinced it's the way many new projects are going to go. The BOINC developers have cottoned to the idea to the extent that they are working with T4T and other interested projects to develop a wrapper that most projects will hopefully be able to use out of the box or at least use as a model for a wrapper specific to their needs. |

I did suggest this a while back here Its useful if you don't have the manpower to develop apps for every platform. The drawback (if you see it as that) is it only works with BOINC v7 so older clients won't be able to use it. Another drawback is the VDI (virtual disk image) files get fairly big so take time to transfer. BOINC blog |

The wrapper under development by the BOINC devs requires BOINC v7 and recent server code/patches. The wrapper in use at T4T works with BOINC 6.x and 7.x so 7.x isn't a strict requirement but it enables some nice features. |

Last modified: 8 Sep 2012, 18:18:32 UTC I think Kyong's message 189 in this thread is saying there won't be a Windows app. Instead they are going to install a virtual Linux machine on Windows hosts (perhaps OS X and Linux hosts as well) so that all hosts will run the same application... the Linux application. That's just my interpretation of Kyong's post, I could be wrong, I suggest waiting for an admin to verify/deny. BTW, if it's true it won't require any work or knowledge of Linux on the part of Windows users. BOINC would install and manage the virtual Linux machine automatically. |

Jujube, it's as you wrote. There are still problems either in run the previous version of the app or after editing code in original version and then updating the windows app. It's to much work still solving problems when the code is changed. There also can be other problems in Mac version, so I decided to you vmboxwrapper. There can be windows and mac os app at the same time. The disadvantage is that these versions will be larger than native app because of vm image. I will test it tommorow, then I will let here know.
