Tried to add the project, but the animation with the green dot going between the 2 computers went on for about a minute, before it said "failed to add project".

First post!

I have noticed this issue as well but only with older versions of BOINC (7.14 and 7.16) with new installs of 8.24 it can attach without issue. Does anyone know why this is?
Thank you!

More than likely you need to update to a newer BOINC VERSION if your computer is running Windows 7 or newer. Download and install the latest version from here.

If you are running Windows XP or VISTA you can't update BOINC past version 7.16.20 you can download and install the ca-bundle.crt file from here.

Instructions on how to update the certificate are found at Using older versions of BOINC.

I'm having the same problem of not being able to (re)add Asteroids.

It might be a certificate issue, but both Tahoe 26.2 and BOINC 8.2.8 are quite recent. In any case, something is clearly blocking your connection to the server. Have you tried adding other projects?

Maybe the DNS cache hasn’t been updated?
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder

Sry, but without any error logs, it’s difficult to provide any relevant advice...

I am also having this issue for months with multiple Mac machines:

Both are MacOS 10.15.7 with BOINC 8.2.8

Since your system does not recognize or trust the server’s certificate, it refuses to communicate with it.

BOINC 7.18.0+ on macOS should use system certificates, which should be upgradable via system updates.
brew update
brew reinstall ca-certificates

I don’t have a Mac, so it would be helpful if someone who is affected could confirm whether this fixes the issue.

There is also an open BOINC issue to make the error message more informative, as it currently makes it look like the project is down when it isn’t.

I am having this problem too. I recently had to reformat and reinstall 10.15.7 on an older Mac I've been using for BOINC for over 10 years. I reinstalled BOINC, and have been able to add Einstein@home, LHC@home, and Rosetta@home with no issues. I cannot get Asteroids@home to add. The error is "Failed to add project. Please try again later." The log has the following:
Fri Jan 16 23:11:06 2026 | | Fetching configuration file from https://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/get_project_config.php
Fri Jan 16 23:11:07 2026 | | Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
Fri Jan 16 23:11:08 2026 | | Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.
I have Asteroids@home running on another computer (side by side) with no issues. I even removed and added Asteroids@home to see if there was an issue adding the project on the other computer, but no issues. I have uninstalled and reinstalled BOINC, various versions going back to 7.16.11 with the same failure resulting. Can someone point me in a direction to troubleshoot this? I'm no computer novice, have been working with Mac since the mid 80s.

I tried adding the file "ca-bundle.crt" to the "/Library/Application Support/Boinc Data". That had no effect. I noticed that there was no BOINC related file in the user's "~/Library/Application Support/" directory on the other computer where everything is normal. but there IS a BOINC file in the "~/Library/Application Support/" on the computer having a problem. I tried copying the file "ca-bundle.crt" to the "~/Library/Application Support/" directory and restarted Boinc Manager. That worked, and I was able to add the project successfully, thanks to re-reading the earlier messages in this thread, specifically, Message 9252.
