I have only one other suggestion for you. I have a hunch you, being a mechanic, probably did this already but if not then you might want to check the CPU's heatsink to see if it's seated flat against the CPU. You might also remove it and check the condition of the thermal grease between it and the CPU. If it's dried and hard you should replace it with fresh grease.

You could also check if it's flat while it's off. If spring mounted you can detect a convex surface easily because the heatsink will rock side to side very easy. A concave surface will not rock side to side as easily. I'm sure you have the right tools to make a very accurate check if there's any doubt :)

Another idea that worked for me once is to piggyback another fan on top of the CPU fan. I tried it because I was wondering if two fans would actually increase the airflow. Apparently it does because the temp dropped appreciably. I used a fan I salvaged out of a dead rig. Luckily the screw holes lined up perfectly so all I needed was slightly longer screws and 4 washers (one on each screw) between the two fans to prevent the blades of the second fan from hitting the original fan. I took the power off an unused HDD connector (red is +5V, yellow is +12V, black is ground).

Hi all,
I've been following this thread for a while. About what Dagorath says of mineral oil cooling here are some useful links:

Other, more radical, ways of cooling can be these:

Hopefully some smiles may have been made.
See you all

The HS I had on it was a Noctua NH12, it uses 2 spring loaded screws to hold the HS down, they screw into a bracket that screws to a backplate, so the HS was definitely flat :).

The HS paste I use is ICD7 which is an extremely thick diamond based paste (yea seriously! :) ), it doesn't dry out like conventional pastes & on removing the HS the other day it seemed in good condition & still covering the whole CPU.
I had wondered about that myself too actually as IIRC that application was the original 1 I did 4-5yrs ago!, although I knew that the temps I got from running F@H were what they had always been. It's just that A@H runs my CPU 4-5C hotter than F@H did.

The CPU's cap isn't perfectly flat, I noticed this some years ago & I was going to lap it, I got as far as finding a fairly cheap flat slab to lap it on but they were out of stock at the time. I think I just forgot about it & latter on I dropped it's clock rate from 3.34 GHz to 3.24 GHz, the corresponding large-ish drop in vcore helped to drop temps a lot so I didn't bother lapping it.

Anyway I'm not going to bother now because after I post this message I'm shutting it down & upgrading the CPU to a Q9550 :), I'm hoping to get at least 3.55GHz out of it & maybe lower temps, wish me luck on the overclocking!

Btw I removed the NH12 to replace it with a Thermalright U120 extreme, it dropped temps by 4-5C :)

Didn't 1 fan straight on top of another increase noise a lot?

Not looking at going to exotic for reliability reasons, this rig runs 24/7.
Will checkout those links latter anyway :), btw you could of made them clickable :P (you still can, edit your post ;)).

Probably but I'm half deaf so I wouldn't know :)

Hi Assimilator1.

I'd like to do it. Sometimes they are clickable; and sometimes they're not. It's the magic of informatics.
I don't know how to do it... Teachings?

When typing a post see the link that says "Use BBCode tags to format your text" up and to the left of the box you type in. That link gives you a summary of how to use BBCode tags to format message text.

If you want a full tutorial with examples then Google bbcode tutorial.

It's not magic. It's:

  • learning what you need to type to format the text the way you want
  • proof-reading what you type
  • previewing the message to see if you typed correctly
  • correcting typos

You can also the buttons above the edit box to format your message text but if you don't understand the basics of how BBCode tags work those buttons will frequently just get you into trouble if you use the buttons then edit your text and introduce typos in the wrong places. At that point you must understand the basics of how markup language works and how BBCode tags work to be able to correct your typos.
