I was wondering why some of the asteroids shown on the scientific results page cannot be found in the Damit DB. For example I was looking at the asteroid "1050 Meta" and wanted more info about it, went over to the Damit DB and searched for it, but it cannot find this asteroid by name or by number. This seems to be the case with not just this asteroid, but with a lot of them.

The reason is that they aren't stored in DAMIT immediately. Many information about the asteroid is at NASA pages where leads the link of each asteroid. If you wants some information which aren't there, you can PM me or wait till the data of an asteroid are stored at DAMIT.

Thank you, Kyong! OK, I'll wait until it gets into DAMIT or I'll look elsewhere for the info (I was mainly looking for orbit diagram, which is also in the NASA page, so it's OK). So in time the info will arrive into DAMIT for all asteroids from the scientific results page, great! http://iqjar.com |

I mean I don't know what work has to be done to publish the results, but if just somebody needs to verify something and I can do it, I'm happy to help. Maybe a month. I am not sure. I have to first rewrite the whole webpage with results. Can't you just tag on the new results onto the end of the list? Now, the webpage is in clean XHTML, but I also have to change the way of putting results there. So I have to rewrite it to PHP and create a database table for it and create also some scripts. There is a strong bias in the shapes we derive. The closer the shape is to a sphere, the lower is the variation of the reflected light caused by its rotation. In such cases, the signal is drowned in the noise and we can't derive the rotation period. Given the poor quality of the data we have now, the shape has to be elongated enough to produce a high-amplitude lightcurve - only then we can find the period and the corresponding shape. Now that's cool! To hear the WHY's about the things we are seeing, THANKS!!! |

I believe you asked with what spec PC could you use to give a significant contribution to Asteroids (not googled :P). You should start a separate thread for this really, but it depends how significant you mean. If you've got cash to burn then go 6 or 8 core Intel CPU (not sure how well AMD CPUs do, anyone?). But you would still make a significant (but less of course) contribution running an old C2 Duo 24/7. As for GPUs, atm only Nvidia ones can be used & they don't give a major speed on Asteroids as they do in other projects, so far.
