Well, I live in the timezone known as UTC -7 (Mountain Standard Time) so I take 8:00 and subtract 7 to get 1:00. The server maintenance will be begin at 1:00 on my clock.

What time will that be in New York? Well, from this time zone map we can see that New York is in zone UTC -5 (Eastern Standard Time) so subtract 5 from 8:00 to get 3:00. The maintenance will start at 3:00 New York time. Would someone in NYC please phone Dave and let him know. Tell him Dagorath sent ya.

What time will the maintenance start in Tokyo? Ummm, the maintenance doesn't start in Tokyo, it starts somewhere near Praque where Kyong lives. What time will it be in Tokyo when the maintenance starts? Well, from the time zone map we see Tokyo is in zone UTC +12 so we add 12 hours to 8:00 and get 20:00. The maintenance will start at 20:00 Tokyo time.

I didn't, until I read your explanation! All I know is I have a completed packet I can't upload that will time out during the down time. :-(

How unfortunate but it might not be as bleak as it seems. You might be saved by the period of grace "rule". Since the server is down they won't be able to immediately send another iteration when your result expires. If you get yours in soon after the server comes back online, before another iteration occurs, there will be no adverse outcome.

I think when people complain about announcements like "shutdown for maintenance at 8:00 UTC" being cryptic, what they mean is they don't know what 8:00 UTC is in their time. If that assumption is true (and other posts in various fora indicate it is true for lots of people), then what some people need is an easy way to convert a UTC time to their time in their heads without going to a website. After all it's just a simple subtraction or addition, one shouldn't need a computer to do that for them.

That's what I am trying to teach them. When Kyong says like "shutdown for maintenance at 8:00 UTC" folks can convert that to their time if they just remember their UTC offset. That's why I linked the map... so they can lookup their offset if they forget it. Or they can put it on a sticky note and stick it on the edge of their monitor until they memorize it.

A clock that shows UTC time or Polish time on their desktop doesn't help them make that conversion, does it?

The conversion is easier if you see both your current local time + offset and UTC time on the same picture:
(offset to UTC changes winter/summer for many places, if someone is uncertain on what UTC offset he is now such add-on may give hint/confirmation)

OK, I see. However the map I linked tells you whether you're on daylight savings time or standard time and the correct offset. To me that seems easier but maybe it's just a left-brain vs. right-brain thing.

Well, I thought that everyone was knowing their UTC offset. Because people live on this planet with time zones, it should be taught at least at schools what is the UTC and what is their UTC offset. Than it is as easy to determine time from UTC as to look on a watch.

Yes, it should be taught but here in North America there are areas, mostly in the southern part of North America, where they find it difficult to add and subtract. They think there should be only 1 timezone and that they should bomb every other country until they all change to their timezone. They don't have much use for UTC or school.

I was with you right up until you went off-the-rails by singling out Southerners. Stupidity and poor education is worldwide. As for our (American) education system, it is best that one remember that the Department of Education is run by Washington, D.C. This is the group who sets education standards and is located in what has always been the North.

Lastly, I'm pretty sure that the post I'm responding to violates three of the message board rules: "hate related", "messaged intended to annoy or antagonize", and "no abusive comments involving nationality or class." I grant that the third example is shaky, but entire media hissy-fits have been had over weaker arguments.

That is all I have to say and will go back to lurking and forgo responding to the subject anymore.
