Possibly because CUDA is much easier to work with they say. OpenCL is said to be cumbersome and generally hasn't been well received by programmers, at least that's the sense I get when reading about CUDA vs. OpenCL from many different sources around the web. CUDA and the NVIDIA architecture were designed and built for each other therefore you can expect there to be fewer compromises. OpenCL was designed to work with a number of existing architectures (otherwise it would be senseless to make it open) so there are necessarily compromises. Compromises negatively affect user friendliness and therefore adoption rates. There is also a perception that CUDA is the platform that gives the greater performance to most massively parallel algorithms with the least effort.

Another factor is that online CUDA classes are easier to find than online OpenCL classes. I had taken two online CUDA classes, both aimed at programming for GPUs, before I even found an online OpenCL class - and that one was aimed at programming for FPGAs instead of GPUs. This results in fewer OpenCL programmers open to low-budget projects.

Greetings

Glad to hear you are making good progress with the GPU app.

As I have an AMD HD 5850, I will have to patiently wait till there is an OpenCL app available.

What that will mean for me, is that I will be able to crunch Asteroids on GPU and crunch one of my other favourite CPU projects on the CPU.

Until, happy crunching.

Regards
Tazzduke

I'm waiting too, until it will be released I'll put all my Ati GPUs on POEM, that did a fantastic job with the new OpenCl app (made with the support of a community member)

I've seen some talk in this thread about the nVidia GT 630 and wanted to mention that the GT 630 was released with two completely different chips powering it.

Two of the three variants of the GT 630 are Fermi based and one of the variants is Kepler based. The two Fermi based ones have 96 cuda cores and are basically a GT 440 with either DDR3 or GDDR5 memory and different clock rates. The Kepler based GT 630 has 384 cuda cores. All three variants are PCI Express 2.0.

There is also a GT 630 OEM version which appears to be Fermi based but has 192 cuda cores and is PCI Express 3.0. It draws twice the power of the Kepler card with 384 cuda cores. Also, several other specs for the OEM card match Fermi but not Kepler.

does this work for ATI cards? I have a Radeon 7800 and would like to use the GPU.

For ATI there are also MilkyWay@Home, Einstein@Home (also for Intel GPUs), SETI@Home (also for Intel GPUs), and Universe@Home is developing a version for that GPU. You can try it.
And the researchers of Einstein@Home have recently found the most massive double neutron star system ever observed. I think they're doing a good job ?

For Milkyway & Einstein@H, both of those require Double Precision processing abilities. Whilst all desktop 7800s have that, only the 7870 XT has a decent amount, but either way you can crunch those projects :).
Team AnandTech - SETI@H, Muon1 DPAD, Folding@H, MilkyWay@H, Asteroids@H, LHC@H, POGS, Rosetta@H, Einstein@H,DHPE & CPDN

Main rig - Ryzen 3600, 32GB DDR4 3200, RX 580 8GB, Win10
2nd rig - i7 4930k @4.1 GHz, 16GB DDR3 1866, HD 7870 XT 3GB(DS), Win7

Regulary you can see incresing the number of models o asteroids and the number of calculated asteroids Inside the Damit Database. You should memorise the numbers on time a month and you will see the phenomenon. It is in direct Relationship with the calculated work.
