SPOOKY – THE GREAT PUMPKIN HALLOWEEN ASTEROID TO MAKE A CLOSE ENCOUNTER With a diameter of between 984 to 1,542 feet, Asteroid 2015 TB145 will be too faint to be seen with the naked eye when it passes close to earth at a distance of 310,000 miles with a velocity of 78,000 MPH on October 31, 2015. If you don't have your own telescope, two possible venues for viewing the event are: 1) The Virtutal Telescope Project webcast October 30 at 8 PM EDT (0000 GMT Oct 31.) on: http://www.virtualtelescope.eu/2015/10/20/potentially-hazardous-asteroid-2015-tb145-very-close-encounter-live-event-31-oct-2015/ 2) Slooh Astronomy Network coverage October 31 at 1 PM EDT (1700 GMT Oct. 31) on: http://live.slooh.com/?utm_campaign=space&utm_medium=textlink&utm_source=launch The asteroid will be radar tracked via a transmitter in Goldstone California and two receivers – one at Green Bank, West Virginia and one at Arecibo, PR. Based on TB145’s unusual trajectory there is some speculation that this asteroid may actually be a comet. |
