I think that this solution is complicated, not much but I think that better solution is to use a local computer. Mirroring database through the internet could cause a lack of bandwitch. Maybe if the mirroring would be planned then it would be no problem. But I need the first a longterm statstics of load of the server, because number of users still increases. The previous stats are also stored on server so I will do some changes and according to results from monitoring I may do some changes.

More is always better for us stats junkies but not if it adversely affects the operation of the server. The current update time is decent as well. Some projects update once a day minutes before the FreeDC clock wraps so Daily stats are 0 on that site unless you happen to refresh during that miniscule window.

Active users: 1478 Donations: 2 Credit statistics is completely worthless from scientific perspective, so update once a day is ABSOLUTELY OK. Twice a day would be nice, but i think, there are much more important things to do right now than this. Shiva -- if you really want help in this area: 1. SWITCH OFF your 10k MONSTER for a week and send those saved money to this project via PayPal. 2. START with Donation campaign with one goal -- maximize the number of donations. I mean 5-10USD/€ per person would be OK also for students. If just 20% of active users will do so, youll raise cca 2200USD, which is enough to buy a separate powerful PC just for stats updates + upgrade of existing server.. BTW: project without crunchers cant live! project without programmers would never exist! p. |

Active users: 1478 Now Donations = 3. I donated 10 Euro. Next month I will donate 10 Euro again, every month 10 Euro. Shiva will donate 0. His pockets are deep; his arms are short ;-) While filling in the form to make my donation it mentioned there is a list of donators but I cannot find it. Link please? A page showing the total donations would also be nice. Also, I would have donated earlier but I did not see the familiar PayPal logo in the home page so I assumed A@H was not taking donations. After reading peeticek_LubosKrutek's post I hunted and found the donate link. It is too small. Kyong, if you put the PayPal logo at the top of every page people will see it and you will receive more donations. BTW: +1 |

Same here - 10€ per month is nothing, but cumulative for a year, thats 120€/user! If just 10 people do so, we have 1200€ yearly! Donation list is in progress -- I discussed about that with kyong two days ago. I think there is a huge potential for donations: CZ Universities Czech National Team Czech Astronomical Institute HA-SOFT company --- http://www.ha-soft.cz/veda + 1500 crunchers around the world! So everybody! - dont be pussy and send some bucks :) p. |

I could be wrong but I think you will find most people do not visit the home page often because they see little reason to do so. Almost everything on the home page they need comes to them on other channels. They go there a few times to find the URL for joining and maybe to read about the project's mission but once they become regular volunteers they visit the home page less frequently. Regular users visit the forum pages, server status and perhaps stats pages more than the home page. If those are not linked via buttons in BOINC manager they set bookmarks in their browser for those pages because sometimes a page can take many seconds to load so it is best to avoid going to home page just to get a link to forum, for example. Best to go directly to forum. If you can find a way to put the PayPal logo on those pages too it will be seen far more often by regular users, IMHO. New volunteers will not donate easily. It is the regular users who donate but they need frequent reminder. |

Regarding donations, you could also consider sending a mass email with some nice words and the reason to support the project with crunching power and money. State why you need better hardware and for what reason exactly and what the desired funding goal is. Then put a link to your donation page in the email. And then send it to the registered users who have set in their account to receive emails from the admin. I´m pretty sure this could raise some additional money also fom people who didn´t know they could donate or they were too lazy until then to do so (like me haha). |
