Last modified: 29 Jan 2013, 4:08:59 UTC Hi Adrian, The Raspberry Pi has an ARM v6 CPU. For some reason BOINC isn't reporting the CPU correctly. It doesn't matter it still works fine. Depending on the model they have either 256Mb or 512Mb of memory. What Adrian was saying is he has overclocked his Pi to 1000MHz. They have a 700MHz CPU. his run time has come down to 51 hours. I have mine with a medium overclock (850MHz) and it is taking around 67 hours a work unit. As you can tell they aren't fast but they use very little power, they only cost $35 and they are slightly bigger than a credit card in size. BOINC blog |

I crunched one in 51.1 hours on my abacus. It's much bigger than a credit card but it uses even less power than a Ras-Pi. The only problem is my fingers are so sore I doubt I could do another one so I guess in the long run the Ras-Pi is the winner. Has anybody worked out the cost effectiveness of a Ras-pi? In other words would it be cheaper per asteroid task than an i7, for example? My i7-2600K does the tasks in 2.3 hours. If I ran 8 tasks at a time that would be 8 tasks every 2.3 hours or 3.5 tasks per hour. A quick look at an online store suggests you can get an i7 machine for about $1200, no monitor, mouse or keyboard. If Ras-Pis are $35 then you could buy 34 Ras-Pis for $1200 and they would do 34 tasks every 51.3 hours (if OCd like Adrian's) or .7 tasks per hour. Wow! An i7 is 5 times more cost effective than a Ras-Pi if you ignore power consumption. I didn't think there would be that much difference and I even thought the Ras-Pi might even be slightly cheaper. |

Mine: 239 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU 959 integer MIPS (Dhrystone) per CPU PS: It's also Radioactive@Home running but Asteroids is using 99% cputime. |

(the estimates are wrong - don't mind them; also don't mind the benchmarks - they use different code than the apps; only real run of the app/task will show the real time) - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :) |

I looked at comparing tasks on my Raspberry Pi (RPi)and my i7 laptop but found that the nature of those tasks can vary greatly. I have Einstein tasks running on my laptop, which take about 110mins to complete per thread, whereas AsteroidAtHome (AAH) on RPi was taking 80h (at 800MHz clock). When I looked at the details of those tasks, the Einstein was typically 17.5TFlops, whereas AAH was 315TFlops, so scaling up my laptop to the AAH task should take about 33h to complete. On that basis, a RPi is roughly equivalent to 40% of a thread in an i7 laptop, ie 20 RPis would perform the same throughput, at a cost of $700, cheaper than the laptop. A few extra £ would be needed for the SD cards, a common power supply (lots of individual mains plug transformers is inefficient), ethernet cables and an ethernet switch, but it would still prove cheaper. I would probably reduce this to 15 RPis by overclocking and use a single 16 way hub for comms.
