I crunch numbers using Boinc for Asteroids@home, Seti@home and MilkyWay@home. I've been doing so for years. In the past, I was always aware that my computer was crunching away when I wasn't using my computer because the screensaver was up. However, now that I have a new computer and Windows 10 (Dell Inspirion 17), my computer keeps shutting down, as far as I can tell, despite my preferences being set to allow number crunching for the 3 projects [set at one hour (60 mins) each]. Maybe I just not seeing it correctly, however, what can I do to make sure that when I'm at work or asleep & not on my computer that my computer is crunching numbers for the 3 projects? How can I be sure that it is? Thanks!

It's most likely a Windows setting (not a BOINC setting) that is putting your computer to sleep. Windows only thinks the computer is being 'used' when there is user input. Look at your "Power & Sleep" settings in Control Panel.

I have three laptops, two rarely have their lids open and exclusively run BOINC work. I had to go into power settings and tell Windows NOT to shut them down when the screen is closed BUT they are on AC power. Lots of little gotchas in Power settings.

I also recently got a Windows 10 desktop (Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700 CPU @ 3.20GHz [Family 6 Model 158 Stepping 10] (12 processors) ) and I also had shut down problems. I fixed them a few ways. One was to google (no quotes) windows 10 how to delete useless programs then later I googled windows 10 how to decrease bloat. That helped a lot, but I still had issues and it mainly came from google chrome browser. If I had 4 or more tabs open and I left it open then there would be computer freezes. I switched to Firefox browser and now I can open up to 9 tabs before it freezes so I keep the tabs lower than that. Closing the browser down totally can help as well. Lastly, you can tweak the Boinc settings. I set the download and upload to 500kb I think. I also set the preferences to use 88% of the CPU. When computer is not in use, it goes up to 90%. Hope this helps.

For keeping your temps down, my suggestion is to use FREE program called Tthrottle: https://efmer.com/download-tthrottle/

& also, for the use of browsers while in apps, turn OFF the "hardware acceleration" (extensive use of GPU).
