I'm getting server has no work available again. I've had none for two days now. Seems like everybody is running low on work. There was a post in News, Progress Report #1 saying that the people who run this project have vanished. I sent Kyong a personal message asking if this was true and telling him he needs to communicate with the community immediately or people will start jumping ship. I hope that is not the case. Last modified: 10 Mar 2018, 1:35:29 UTC I read elsewhere that there needs to be no work to send and less than 100,000 tasks in progress before it will generate more. So those of you with the 270,000+ tasks stop hoarding them and finish them. Perhaps the project needs to implement restrictions on how many tasks in progress each machine can have. BOINC blog |

I read elsewhere that there needs to be no work to send and less than 100,000 tasks in progress before it will generate more. That sounds like a good idea. Especially if there are users sitting on hundreds of thousands of uncrunched WUs. Steve Gaber Oldsmar, FL |

For what it's worth (I've only recently rejoined this particular project) but I am slowly getting a trickle of 'validation' WUs, though my computer pings the server fairly often. It looks like people are just grabbing the returned ones for validation much faster than people are processing the ones currently out.... BoincStats shows 64 million work credits earned on this project yesterday, so work is clearly getting done.

According to the Server Status page there are 230,000 work units in progress, so we got through 40,000 since my last post. Its still going to take 3 to 4 days before we get it down to the 100,000 needed to generate more work. Hoarding work leads to the database getting bloated and those hosts are probably not able to complete the work in time. Like I said before the project needs some limits on how many can be cached, which is why this project goes from “feast to famine” regularly. Seti have limits of 100 CPU and 100 per GPU, which is a bit low but if Asteroids were to adopt something like that there would be a regular stream of work all the time and we wouldn’t have to wait two weeks to get tasks validated. Last modified: 10 Mar 2018, 23:14:03 UTC The last advice I saw offered by staff was to set at least a 3 day cache... So its quite possible that those WU outstanding are in part due to that advice. Also quite a number of crunchers have more than one rig working, some seemingly have over 20 computers working... So 20 x 3days = ? WU.. Frankly I'd rather staff monitored the server more closely and kicked its rear end when it runs out, so that we get more than a few resends and less complete outages.. I run 3 projects, and this one seems to have more out of work episodes than others, but its a worthwhile project, and I know Kong has quite a few problems outside the project... Last modified: 11 Mar 2018, 1:58:46 UTC Just handwaving here, but... There are (ATM) 222839 WUs out, and 36900 computers with recent credit. That works out to almost exactly 6 WUs per recently active computer... for my GPU, that's a bit over 5 hours of work, and my GPU isn't that special. Looking at it another way, since a WU is 480 credits, there are just under 107 million credits of work outstanding... since BoincStats shows 65 million credits of work reported yesterday (for this project), that's less than a day and a half of work at that rate (and on the 9th, 129 million credits of work were done, which the highest in the last 40 days, and ~3x what the low was). Seems obvious that 3 days is too long for this project the way it's currently set up... when a new batch of work is added, the people that ping the server first suck it all up, even without 'irrational' settings.... IIRC, the default setting for the BOINC client is to grab 10 days of work. |
