Last modified: 23 Oct 2018, 6:43:42 UTC I noticed that sse3 tasks heat my motherboard, MSI X370 Gaming Plus, over 85 °C (yesterday it reached 88 °C). With avx tasks it stays on 78-79 °C. Is there a way to download only avx tasks? I have an AMD Ryzen 7 1700 overclocked to 3.925 GHz and I'm currently running 7 A@H tasks and 7 Universe@Home tasks with the CPU. I can't control the PC during the day, so if it continues to download both avx and ss3 tasks I have to decrease the number of A@H tasks on the CPU. In the pic on the left I see 2 graphics cards. Are they the ones you use? If so than that's your problem. They use radial fans instead of cage fans (blowers). Cage fans blow the heat from the GPU out through the back of the card and out of the case. And since they are blowing air out of the case they also help draw cool air into the case. Radial fans don't blow air out of the case. They blow heat from the GPU into the case where it recirculates until extracted by a case fan. If you use radial fan graphics cards then you usually need additional case fans. Or just remove the sides from the case. |

I don't think it depends on the GPUs. As I said in the other message, with avx tasks my motherboard doesn't overcome 80°C, while with sse3 tasks it become very hot, over 85°C. Here's a post about saving app_info.xml file in Asteroids project directory: https://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/forum_thread.php?id=200&postid=2760#2760 That thread is from a few years back, but app version hasn't changed. Maybe that example would still work, I don't know. That file should be saved as a real xml file (not txt). Otherwise Boinc won't be able to read it. So, you could try these lines in it: <app_info> <app> <name>period_search</name> <user_friendly_name>Asteroids</user_friendly_name> </app> <!-- AVX --> <file_info> <name>period_search_10210_windows_x86_64__avx.exe</name> <executable/> </file_info> <app_version> <app_name>period_search</app_name> <version_num>1021</version_num> <avg_ncpus>1.00</avg_ncpus> <max_ncpus>1.00</max_ncpus> <plan_class>avx</plan_class> <file_ref> <file_name>period_search_10210_windows_x86_64__avx.exe</file_name> <main_program/> </file_ref> </app_version> </app_info> |

I already have an XML file to run almost 7 tasks. Do I have to write this after the old text or to create a new XML file? ASUS X570 E-Gaming AMD Ryzen 9 3950X, 16 core / 32 thread 4.4 GHz AMD Radeon Sapphire RX 480 4GB Nitro+ Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti Gaming X Trio 4x16 GB Corsair Vengeance RGB 3466 MHz |

Last modified: 25 Oct 2018, 16:48:56 UTC I already have an XML file to run almost 7 tasks. Do I have to write this after the old text or to create a new XML file? There are many "XML files" used by BOINC, you probably have cc_config.xml or app_config.xml 0) EDIT: best Software to control CPU and GPU temperature when using BOINC is TThrottle __________________________ To use just apps you want you will need to make app_info.xml 1) First (IMPORTANT) - SAVE (COPY) all the .exe and .dll files from .....\projects\asteroidsathome.net_boinc\ !!! if you make wrong app_info.xml BOINC will delete many files without asking! 2) You will need to create app_info.xml describing ALL the apps you need, including GPU apps! No .exe and .dll files will be downloaded from server, you need to have them and put them manually in .....\projects\asteroidsathome.net_boinc\ 3) Example: This is my app_info.xml file for Asteroids@home to run ONLY on CPU and ONLY SSE3: <app_info> <app> <name>period_search</name> <user_friendly_name>Period Search Application SSE3</user_friendly_name> </app> <file_info> <name>period_search_10210_windows_intelx86__sse3.exe</name> <executable/> </file_info> <app_version> <app_name>period_search</app_name> <version_num>10210</version_num> <file_ref> <file_name>period_search_10210_windows_intelx86__sse3.exe</file_name> <main_program/> </file_ref> </app_version> </app_info> 4) You need to read (e.g. the above link that describes app_info.xml / Anonymous platform) and understand what you are doing to make app_info.xml As example of complexity - this is my app_info.xml for SETI@home including apps for CPU and GPU (this app_info.xml is NOT made by me manually, is was created by installer known as "Lunatics' Unified Installer" which is only for SETI@home) <app_info> <app> <name>astropulse_v7</name> </app> <file_info> <name>AP7_win_x86_SSE2_OpenCL_ATI_r2742.exe</name> <executable/> </file_info> <file_info> <name>libfftw3f-3-3-4_x86.dll</name> <executable/> </file_info> <file_info> I don't think it depends on the GPUs. So you're saying improving the airflow through the case won't reduce the case temperature and even if it did it wouldn't cool the mobo better? Hilarious. You're not thinking at all. You can "think" all you want but you won't really know until you try it. Just removing 1 side you'll see the mobo temperature drop to 80 even with SSE3 running. Remove 2 sides and you'll see it drop to 75 with SSE3 running. As I said in the other message, with avx tasks my motherboard doesn't overcome 80°C, while with sse3 tasks it become very hot, over 85°C. You found a connection between SSE3 and temperature. So what? The root cause of the problem is inadequate case cooling. Remove a side and you'll see CPU, GPU and mobo temps all drop even with SSE3 running. |
