This project looks very weak. I have tried for a while to get any CPU or GPU tasks and keep getting "Project has no tasks available". I have gotten 1 GPU task since I started but nothing else. Is this project even viable anymore or should I just move on? Looking at the message boards, even they look pretty dead.

Hey there, you've joined the project in a time where the current batch of work units is done. So it seems you need to wait for the next one. Usually they have enough tasks to feed clients for one or two weeks, starting a new batch the week after the last tasks were sent.

I'm not sure wether it is the increased perfomance of the hosts or the project doesn't have enough work in general. But compared to the last years I see more and more waiting periods. We're running out of work frequently.

Sadly there is no communication from the project team to get any actual information. Maybe the project is slowly dying, nobody knows... :(

Work shortages are common problem on BOINC projects. Sadly there are only few projects where work is always available.

You can also try Einstein@Home. Researchers are studying gravitational waves and pulsar stars.
Or MilkyWay@Home, to create a 3D map of the Milkyway.
There is also Universe@Home, to study how black holes work.
