I keep getting the following message:

Message from server: NVIDIA GPU: Upgrade to the latest driver to process tasks using your computer's GPU.

I have the driver version 440.100 installed?
I'm running ubuntu 20.04

any help would be good.

Yeah, I get the same nag here.

I've always read it as a general-purpose advisory reminder more than a comment on whatever version is actually being used.
Unless the drivers are truly ancient I doubt there's any significant impact on performance, if any at all, between a few points difference in driver versions.

Maybe I should look at running another project instead of this one.

This project goes through fairly regular periods where it runs out of space, can't be accessed, or has no work to download. It's a bit on the choppy side to say the least - browse through some of the threads here for an overview.

But having just come back online I would expect it to settle down over the next few days so if you want to continue, just leave BOINC running and work will eventually start flowing.

then if my GPU still hasn't any work I'll look for another project.

I can't figure out why it reports my drivers are out of date
but like you said give it a while to settle down.

Compared to the Windows drivers those "ready-rolled" ones for Ubuntu lag a little and while it's often possible to download, compile and install later versions from Nvidia it's not something I'd recommend unless you're very familiar with the low level workings of Linux.

It's not an especially complicated process, but fraught with traps for the unwary. It also takes you outside the automatic driver update cycles provided by Canonical for Nvidia cards which might add further complications.

Actually, according to that the current "long lived" Linux driver version is in fact 440.100 (released June 24) whereas for Windows it's currently 451.48 - also released June 24.
The Linux version may jump in the near future so it's worth keeping an eye on it if you fancy "rolling you own".

An aside: Windows is often assumed to be the only arbiter of what's current - and that seems to be the case here. (looks for "rolls eyes" icon, finds none)

I too have been getting this for a while. Ended up suspending the project out of frustration and upgrading my graphics card's driver to no immediate avail. Will be following along with this thread while I restart/update the Asteroids project back to my BOINC program.

Executive summary for anyone arriving late to the party:

1. As of "now" the current Nvidia drivers for Linux are 440.100 and 451.48 for Windows, both released June 24.

2. The Nvidia driver version check performed by this project is lazy: it's apparently assuming that anything less than the current Windows version is outdated.

3. Clearly this makes no sense with Linux where the latest version is installed - but that happens to be a different version number and consequently, we get the nag message to update.

My system is Windows 10. So... I'll double-check my particulars.

The good news is I found Driver Version: 450.57 on Nivida's website.
The bad news is I've no idea how to install it.
I guess I have to wait for Ubuntu to sort it out...

U have to add:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
Then try to update drivers....
