You don’t have a second project to keep you going in the meantime?

Hi, I'm new to a lot of this.. Forums and Boinc included. I was running strictly Asteroids@home when SETI went dark, and now I haven't had any new tasks in some time. Is this normal?

This project often runs out of work for many days.

That happens a lot and is why many people chose to participate in more than one project.

I started with SETI, then added POGS, then Asteroids, now Rosetta and World Community Grid.

Pogs completed its work, as did SETI.

So when one project ends, runs out of space or is down for maintenance or, as happens here frequently, crashes, my computer always has something to do. Ans it runs 24/7/365.

Thanks. I guess I'm paranoid that I'm doing something wrong more often than I should be. I'm also paranoid about running the machine 24/7/365, even though I have extremely good hardware - if I'm doing something that's heavy enough to kick all of the cooling fans on I usually try not to do that thing for very long. I forget which project I had that had an 80% computation failure rate, because it required 95-100% of CPU time to run.. So I dropped that project. I'll look into POGS.

It's not easy to do something wrong here. I am a relative idiot when it comes to this stuff and I ask a lot of questions and complain about outages.

But I started doing Seti@Home soon after it began. Added a few other projects and crunched BOINC, one computer at a time, doing very little else, 24/7/365 until they die. I'm now on my fifth computer.

It was shutting itself down frequently until I added a heftier power supply and two more powerful fans. It runs fine now. I used a utility called CoreTemp that keeps track of the CPU temperature. It runs between 38 and 52 degrees C and the exhaust air is much cooler. You could do that.

Here's a little about POGS:

In addition to this mostly BOINC Desktop computer, I also have another desktop and a laptop.

Some people have 3, 4, 5 or more computers also crunching BOINC.
