BOINC CreditNew algorithm rewards credit based on the number of FLOPs involved in the calculation. NOT based on the time taken to perform those calculations.

A task run on a cpu and the same task run on a gpu involve crunching through the exact same number of calculations so the credit rewarded is the same.

Doesn't matter that the gpu doing parallel calculations can run through them much faster that the single thread run on the cpu.

It is up to each project to define which credit algorithm to follow and install in their servers.

Yes, it's still a very poor system.

Since bizarrely it needs to be said, the vast majority of projects in the BOINC ecosystem are doing valuable science. What keeps people on one project or another are various combinations of personal interest and the flashy trinkets ie the badges.
With the change here to "credit new" and the resulting significant drop in credit returns it has made getting those shiny trinkets absurdly more difficult and makes it virtually impossible to climb the leader board against existing members that have achieved scores under the old system that are FAR more difficult to achieve under the new despite significant advances in hardware. It's an almost 7 times reduction in returned credit (6.8 to be closer). It's like the project increased the credit required to get recognition 6.8 times what it states in the description.

Quite simply, it's unfair, insulting to members, and demonstrates that the admin team can't be bothered changing the BOINC server settings from the default to maintain consistency. This wasn't a change to "better reflect" anything, it was laziness and nothing more.

It's also about gamerfication. The fact that you get credits and badges encourages people to crunch. It's very simple
Just as was mentioned earlier crunching as a team and earning more points than that of another team encourages people to crunch. It's hacking the brain

Gamerfercation, challenges and being proud to contribute to science encourage people to crunch. Though money incentive would help as well (look at how popular team gridcoin is). Most people I know in IRL will not crunch as they see it as a waste of electricity, they feel similar with crypto but at least with crypto you can get something out of it. Points and badges give you that dopamine hit to keep crunching

Shame on you Asteroids for giving such low credits for a completed workunit. It is obvious that you do not care how much it cost us to run our machines. As you can see, in two years you have not even bothered to reply to users complaining of the same thing.

Oh come on people. We are here to do science. To propel knowledge and help scientists understand our Universe better. Points are valueless internet magic. And admins driving BOINC projects are often overburdened and understaffed and may not have the time to work on third grade issues. So you all should just chill and continue crunching.
