How are the initial time estimates determined?

It is somewhat irritating to me as a new user of Asteroids that the time estimates for tasks are off by a factor of five or more most of the time. How is this initial estimate calculated? Doesn't Asteroids have all the information it needs from the machine capabilities and preferences for it to come up with a better initial estimate? Very admittedly, people with much greater knowledge than I come up with these estimates. I would just like to understand a bit more about how these estimates are determined. Some posts indicate that these get better with time. How does that happen? I would like to understand the process better. Thanks for your time, Bill |

You should blame BOINC for most of your issue. Boinc and the project software can't develop an accurate estimation of task progress or time remaining until you have returned 11 validated tasks for each application you run.
