I don't trust Boinc settings, crank it up to 100% and see what happens.

The setting I use to let me use the computer nicely for general use is to turn down the number of cores (CPUs they call them) used by Boinc to 90%.

If you play games or anything else needing a lot of computer power, you can give Boinc an exception to stop when that program is running.

Are you running Asteroids on GPU, CPU, or both? Are you using other projects at the same time?

How much is busy? 1 core? All the cores? I see a delay whenever boinc rearranges things of 30 seconds on a slow computer and 5 seconds on a fast one, but it's only one core. This shows in windows task manager as Boinc manager using a whole core. I cannot interact with Boinc during this time, but the other tasks continue on the rest of the cores.

Buffer? If there is one day a week without tasks, make sure you buffer at least this much work, Boinc is good at this. If the server is down and won't take them back, your computer will send them later. Boinc is also good at this. Not sure why you had a problem in the first place.

Is a GPU doing the same size task as a CPU? If so, why does the GPU need 2GB, 200 times more than the CPU's 10MB?

Sorry about the double post. I did a double click on Post Reply.

Editing your post to two spaces seems to delete it (if you get there during editable time). Pity they didn't just put a delete button, strange programmers....

Works on all Boinc forums.

Depends which CPU fan you've got, and if you used decent thermal paste. Some of both those things are rubbish. I use paste rated at 17 W/mK, and the biggest cooler I can fit.

You can get electrically conducting pastes which move much more heat, but you have to be very careful not to let any get onto the electrics or something expensive will fry. So I never touch that stuff.

Can I make it run in 64 bit mode? All the apps I use on that phone also run on the newer phone which I assume is 64bit since Asteroids runs ok on it.

Where do I put the platform command? I can't see it in the Boinc manual at https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Client_configuration

I have a Samsung Galaxy A10 with Android 11. It stopped getting tasks a week or two ago, I'm just told "got 0 new tasks" as though there are none in the queue. My newer phone works fine.

Boinc reports:

ARMv8 Processor rev 4 (v8l) [Impl 0x41 Arch 8 Variant 0x0 Part 0xd03 Rev 4] (8 processors)

I can't find 64 or 32 bit mentioned anywhere.

Unfortunately I'm now down to running two Einstein tasks on it, as it's not got enough RAM for more, and the other projects it can run are all out of work or down.

True, motherboards have weird default settings. The CPU by itself, no matter what you tell the BIOS, will limit the clock speed to protect itself. It's hard wired and you cannot stop it, Intel and AMD don't want them frying under warranty. That's the only limit you need. If you see it stuck on this limit, you know you should cool more to get more clock speed.

Surely his Ryzen 7 is new enough? It's not as old as my 12 year old things.

Does the new app not like older phones? My old Samsung isn't getting any tasks. It was getting them ok a week or two ago.

I thought CPUs didn't shut off anymore? They just throttle. Even my 12 year old ones do this. Even if a fan fails they slow right down and sit at 95C. Something very weird happening if you're getting a shutoff.

Doesn't seem to be true, they're getting them now. An old dual core CPU was starved too, I think it's a case of waiting for the right type of tasks to appear. They appear faster than they can be processed, it's just an initial delay.

Is this still a problem? My old AMD cards (Tahiti, 280X) will not get work, they used to. Or has the new program become incompatible with them? I'm only getting CPU work.

Nothing burns your CPU unless you have inadequate cooling, this is a physical problem for you to fix and nothing to do with the project. Even it was to overheat, all CPUs will self throttle and never break.

Sorry for the off topic post, but I stayed at this campsite/B&B/kid's charity and would hate to see it closed down. Network Rail never paid them the £250K damage they caused by making a flood by blocking a stream. Now they're doing this. It seems Network Rail operate above the law.

My Android phones are set to pause Boinc when the screen is on. If I turn the screen on, then off again, Boinc pauses, then starts new tasks instead of the halfway through ones. These new tasks fail. Not sure why Boinc does this, I've reported it here: https://github.com/BOINC/boinc/issues/5402

1902 Fri, 20/10/2023 05:03:42 AM Suspending computation - computer is in use
1903 Fri, 20/10/2023 05:03:49 AM Resuming computation

These two started fresh:

1905 Asteroids@home Fri, 20/10/2023 05:03:49 AM Starting task ps_231009_input_4963_132_2

Then immediately caused a computation error:

Judging by https://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/gpu_list.php your card isn't mentioned. So either not many people are using one here, or nobody with one has managed to complete a task. I'm not sure if that lists every card used or only the popular ones.
I see yours last worked on 30 Sept. Not sure if the list I linked to above shows back that far.

Asteroids is manually reloaded, they don't always do it in time. I keep a 2 day buffer so I never run out.
Einstein usually has load of everything available. Except Gravity.
