Maybe the feeder is just slow because of the large number of tasks in the database, but maybe something can be tweaked to make it faster even with a large database.

Hi

I agree with the above - I have tasks in my "Valid tasks" list going back to 19th November 2023.

These have been awarded credits and by now should have been purged from the database?

And both have met the required quorum as well !

Maybe someone can advise the admin to take a look at this issue?

I have some news from admins, there was a DOS attack from China's network on the website 1000 to 8000 connections at a time. They took some preventive measures. It's hard to say if there's any connection with the Challenge though, it could be just a coincidence.

Hiya

Thanks for the information.

I agree it looks like a coincidence, as the number of Formula BOINC members taking part in the Challenge is relatively small (although I cannot say how many hosts each member is using !!).

Is it possible this overwhelmed the server?

Hi

There is another issue:

I am still showing completed and validated tasks that were uploaded and credited in November 2023.

So, the database table is probably HUGE right now and this will be slowing down the functionality of the Asteroids "back-office" systems, as it is the admins task (assuming it is not done automatically**) to remove old completed tasks from the database, making it leaner and fitter for what it has to do.

** and clearly, if old tasks are *still* in the database, 5 months later, then the automated scripts are NOT working correctly :-(.

Nobody knows. I get the same thing. Half a dozen requests for work and get nothing and finally one succeeds.

Doesn't help the project was chosen for a Formula Boinc contest the other day either. Scheduler is getting hammered more than usual.

The Formula BOINC Challenge has selected Asteroids as a project in the past without issues...so, if this is putting more strain on the servers, then the servers should easily be able to cope with some extra demand, as they have done so in the past.

Hi

From what I have found out, the website server has been slow for some time, but the Formula BOINC Sprint Challenge should not have affected the upload/download server functions as FB members have been successfully downloading work units and uploading completed tasks pretty well.

But of course, this would mean that there would be an increase in demand for tasks, but the project has handled such Challenges before now without issue, so this Challenge is unlikely to be putting more strain on their servers.

And please note that the server had SSL certificate issues just a day or so ago !

However, it would help if more pro-active admins actually looked after the project better than seems to be the case !

Formula BOINC 2024 re-launch

I am acting as admin for the above group and I wanted to let you know that the Formula BOINC website has been updated for the 2024 Season.

And that the Sprint Season will start on 29th February - just about 2 weeks time - so please help publicise Formula BOINC to your team members so that they can take part.

For Teams:
Teams previously registered to take part in these regular BOINC Challenges in previous years have been included for this season and Teams have now been allocated to one of 3 Leagues, depending on their performance in 2023.

If your team is NOT registered already, please ask your team founder to register (via the FB website)

Registered Teams are listed here:

https://formula-boinc.org/teams.py?race=0&division=1&standing=team

And it would be really good if your team members can take part and support the various BOINC projects throughout the forthcoming year.

As many teams are already registered, members do not have to do anything EXCEPT to make a note of the date and time when the Sprints will be taking place and to ensure that they are crunching tasks from the chosen project.

This information will be displayed on our website here:

https://formula-boinc.org/sprints.py?race=0&division=1&standing=team

For members:
We also have a Members League so that individuals can compete against one another - this is entirely voluntary but it can be rewarding to know how well you are doing when compared to other FB members - even those in the same team.

If any team members have not already registered, then there is a webpage that you can visit and register, which is here:

https://formula-boinc.org/howtoregister.py

And finally for all the latest news about Formula BOINC, we would ask members to visit our forum:

https://formula-boinc.org/forum/index.php

I do hope teams and members will support the Challenges and by doing so, this will help the many BOINC projects who need the support of volunteers in order to continue their research.

best regards

How do I use it to crunch Asteroids data?

Easy.

Install the card in your PC
Install the latest NVidia drivers

Start up BOINC Manager - it should detect that a GPU is present.

Go to your Project Preferences, (on your account, on this website) and allow GPU tasks.

Go to BOINC Manager, select the Asteroids project and then click on "update". If you haven't already, set BOINC Manager to "allow new work" on the Asteroids project.

That's about it.

I've had a load of "ps_160915" (sse2) series WU's fail with the code "Abandoned". (44 in total)

There's nothing in the Stderr Out either - not sure what's caused it.

I've also suffered over 80 "Error while computing" the same series tasks.

This time Stderr Out says:

But, the same PC has generated credits on other "ps_160915" series tasks both before and afterwards without an issue.

Maybe a bad batch ?
