Flooding Is Nearly a Daily Occurrence Throughout the
U.S. Flooding in the U.S. Americans nationwide. And although flooding from

country over the past two decades. Since 2000,
at least one flood occurred in the U.S. 300 days per year, on average.
The NOAA database also shows that all 50 states and the District of Columbia were affected by flooding
in 2021. This ever-present risk underscores the need
for comprehensive resilience planning that can help safeguard communities and the critical infrastructure they depend on daily, such as roadways, schools, and hospitals.

According to FEMA, flooding is a factor in more than 90 percent of disaster-related property damage in the United States, with many homes repeatedly damaged by floods.
But actually finding out if a property is flood-prone when house shopping can be difficult.
Twenty-one states have no legal requirements that a
seller disclose a property’s history of flood damage
to a buyer. The other 29 states and Washington, D.C., have a variety of disclosure
requirements, but some of them can actually make it harder for buyers to find out about a house’s flood history.
The best strategy for potential buyers: Look at FEMA’s flood history maps, but know that they are
only a starting point. A more low-tech option: Introduce yourself
to your prospective neighbors and ask them about flooding in the area.
