Message 6717 - Posted: 21 May 2020, 15:27:57 UTC - in response to Message 6707.
There are now 25 completed tasks in my progress list "Uploading" for days. Some have deadlines in two days.

What will happen to them? They represent a lot of computer time and resources.

You wont get credit for them if they go past the deadline so i would recommend to stop working on asteroids until the problem is resolved and if you have any do past the deadline you might as well delete them.

It would be nice though to have someone in charge let us know that they are working on the problem. Seems like just a decent respect for the contributors of this project.

As the project is "down for maintenance", I'm pretty sure that they are working on a solution, wait&see.

I meant that they might indicate the true problem and let us know what their solution will be and about how long it might take to fix it. Seeing how we have probably lost many finished work units, they could also update us on whether we will still receive credit for them or are we just spinning our wheels for nothing.

Already saw that.
Doesn't say much except that they shutdown a bunch of computers.

Thanks for your service.

Good news, servers looks back online and working (at least for me, 1620 tasks waiting to validate, was 150 to 300 before servers crash, so you see, 20 tasks, it's "nothing" :D #lilJoke )

Until today, there were 50 completed tasks waiting to upload, now there are none.

But there ARE 45 tasks marked variously as "errors while computing," "deleted by server," or "timed out."

This just ain't right. Our computers spend too many hours doing the work for this project to be treated indifference or neglect. It's not the credit I'm concerned about it's the wasted time, energy and wear on the computers that matter more to me.

Doesn't seem like the project managers are bothered by it.

I agree. The total lack of communication from the project managers appears as arrogant, and happens toooo many times, especially in the last month. I'm not whining about the credits fiasco, as credits in themselves are meaningless, serving only as a comparative between crunchers, and the same situation affects all boinc projects. However, the waste of resources (cost of hardware, software, internet charges, electicity), when acknowledgement for work done is ignored, is what annoys a lot of crunchers. It is not enough simply to say the project managers are working on a solution, it would help if a simple daily update could be given so we can make an informed decision as to whether to switch to another project until the problem is resolved. As the previous poster has stated, it's especially galling when we stick with the project during an outage only to find many of the wu's fail to credit because of problems caused by outages.

Silence doesn't equate arrogance. Sometimes silence is just silence. That said, I firmly believe, after reading many articles, that science budgets have been cut across the world as there are anti-science politicians at the helm in many areas today. The first things to get cut are student outreach and public outreach so any message board moderators would be the first to go to preserve the science already in the pipeline. The worst cuts were at NASA where large areas of science were cut and many projects will be wasted and not finished. This article mentions the education office being cut as many universities have also done so to try to preserve the jobs of people doing work rather than monitoring message boards. In some cases, volunteers and project managers of BOINC projects might never have had a monetary budget for helping people or educating the crunchers and they did it pro bono. And when the further new budget cuts hit, they had to do more work for less pay or in some cases were not allowed to come in on the weekends due to covid to help us crunchers or even allowed to pay a university student to check on the message boards! So have some compassion during this horrible time for science. https://spacenews.com/white-house-proposes-19-1-billion-nasa-budget-cuts-earth-science-and-education/

Server status page says db_purge process is not running, so it's no wonder the disk is full

Unfortunately, this project seems to be using the Mushroom Theory of Management!

For those who don't know about the Mushroom Theory of Management, it describes a style of management where employees or users (like mushrooms) are kept in the dark and periodically given a load of manure.

Well, it's apparently only one guy, so he might be overwhelmed. Maybe he has a day job. Then there are equipment failures.

Oh, yeah, and a certain pandemic that is raging around the world.
